Melville Intermediate - Isaac's Moon Observation Tool

Currently we have students that are involved in observing the Moon for the Worldwide Moon Project. One of these students is Isaac from Room 13 he and his Dad have constructed a device that allows him to accurately record the angle that the Moon is at! We made a quick video to demonstrate it!

  1. Isaac! This looks like a really interesting project and a very clever tool that you have made. I would love to know a little more about how the tool worked and what moon project you are participating in. What are your goals and what have you learnt? Maybe you could keep us posted (if you excuse the pun!) :-)

  2. What a cool gadget! I like how it's made with things that we have access too - as in not from NASA. I hope you get to share any interesting findings from your research on this blog.

  3. This moon project is going on all over the world where people write down their observations of the moon. Dad and I just got a full protractor and wired it to a old gun barrel, then got some brass to stick the metal in place. To use it you just look through one end and line up the moon (or stars), then read the angle on the protractor. It's quite simple. I've learned a lot about the moon's shapes and when and where it rises and sets. I'm really enjoying this project. Thanks for the positive comments! I'll keep you posted :)

  4. What an interesting project. I hadn't heard of it before. You & your dad are obviously very creative - maybe you'll be an inventor when you grow up.

  5. Hi Isaac! I am really interested in this project as you can tell... I am off to make one of your gadgets with my daughters tomorrow.I will keep you posted with our observations. I wonder how the south of the south island will compare with your observations?

  7. Hi I really enjoyed watching this video on your Moon Observation tool. I'm in Mr. Millers class in King City California and my avatars name is Venus. I like how you explained your invention. Do you normally do inventions like this one every day or every other day.

  8. No it wasn't that hard to make. My dad has a lathe which the brass bits were made on, and yes, it was fun making it. I don't usually actually invent things fully, like this one. But I definitely have a lot of ideas!
