Melville Intermediate - Working with Room 6 Kilbirnie School

Today in class Hayze and Mackenzie, who have been Skyping Classrooms and Schools in Maori Language, spoke once again with our friends at Kilbirnie Primary School in Wellington. Its the second to last day of school in New Zealand, and in the background we had our regular Math's Lesson continuing, there were some wonderful highlights - the students from Room Six performed two Waiata for Hayze and Mackenzie, which was very, very special for the students. The lesson was also about teaching as well, as Hayze and Mackenzie spent time going over counting in Maori with the students from Room Six, their class page is one of our very favourites! If you've not already visited it, its a must see, click here. This is highlights from that session:

This video is very special as its not from Melville Intermediate, over the past three years we've posted nearly 1,000 times, this is the first time we've taken a video from another class page in New Zealand and used it on our site!

Melville Intermediate - "Mystery" Cooking Challenge

On Monday Cullen, Kieran and Bradley went to the Cooking Room. This term we've been looking at procedural writing for our written language. One of the tasks was for the students to create a set of instructions for others to follow - Cullen did an exceptional job and produced the following video. There's a twist, Cullen's not revealing the actual finished product that you get to make, you have to follow the instructions to work out what it is! Filmed by Kieran, Bradley and Cullen on Monday 12th July 2011 in the Mrs Browns Cooking Room.

Melville Intermediate - Thanks to Room 7 at St Marys'

Last week we had a very special visitor in Room Eight, it was the teacher Mrs Kennedy from St Marys School in Mosgiel, whose on a tour of New Zealand for her masters! She delivered a thank you card to the students of Melville Intermediate who'd worked with her and the class.

This was very exciting for our students as although we've done lots of online work and met many students and classrooms its the second time this year that someone has come to school just to meet us! The Girls were also very excited by the gift that they received - which made a nice gift heading into the last week of school.
If you not already visited their wonderful class page then you can do so by clicking on the link for it on our sidebar, or by clicking on the link here, we've really enjoyed working with every class that we've networked with this year and the the school year is only half the way through!

Melville Intermediate - Visited Hamilton East Primary Yet?

Recently one of the new class blogs that I've discovered belongs to Hamilton East Primary School. Their school has a variety of class pages up and running but the one that I favour the most is the wonderful one belonging to the students of Room Fourteen.

They're a Y3/4 Class and have begun posting some really interesting material, a good mixture of videos, articles and students work. You can visit their wonderful class page through the side link to this blog or you can click on the link here.

They have used some of our Maori Language videos to teach their students and the schools Kapa Haka site is also well worth checking out.

Melville Intermediate - A very special award

We've received a very, very special award for our class work here at Melville Intermediate School. We've received special recognition from the Human Rights Commission of New Zealand.   The award is specifically for our work for Maori Language and Maori Language Week (where we're also listed as a resource on the official Maori Language Week Facebook Page).

We're thrilled with this wonderful official recognition for our students work - a big thank you to all those classrooms from New Zealand and around the world that have allowed us to share the students culture with them and contributed video footage and Skyped with us.  You can see all of this work linked from the 'pages' section of this blog in the top right hand corner.

This acknowledgment will be publicised in the official monthly e-newsletter On the Bright Side, Positive Contributions to Race Relations, with commentary.

Given that this week is officially Maori Language Week the timing of this award couldn't be more special, and we will be sharing this with the students tomorrow.  A reminder to all of our visitors that if you would like to Skype with our tutors (Mackenzie and Hayze) they are available, just leave us a comment on this post with your contact information or email our teacher at myles.webb@gmail.com.
