Today our students were very excited to see an important comment on our blog yesterday. We found a comment from the Race Relations Commissioner, who mentioned that he loved our blog and was putting a link to it on the official Facebook Page for Maori Language Week for 2011. We've taken a screen shot of the page from Facebook because we can't access it at school but we're very excited and very proud to this development! We've already had a considerable number of visitors from all around the world through the link, we can't link directly back to it but if you have a Facebook account then search for the official Maori Language Week Page, don't forget that we are currently helping people with tutoring online with Maori Language through Skype, if you haven't done so already leave us a comment on this post, or email our teacher, or have a look at the videos that we've created that are listed on the sub pages located in the top right hand corner of this blog!

Melville Intermediate - Rocky River Elementary

In New Zealand we are currently approaching the halfway mark in the school year, which is scheduled to finish in December for 2011. Our global friends in the USA are currently on their Summer break, yesterday we had a wonderful comment left on our class page from Brenda Todd from Grade Two, Class 117B Rocky River Elementary School in North Carolina, USA. On their page they've created a wonderful farewell video for the their friends and have highlights of their learning for the school year. If you watch the Animoto you'll see a certain Melville Intermediate and a Maori co-ordination hand game featuring Hayze and Mackenzie from Room Eight feature from the 52 second mark to about 1:20. We're going to be watching this as a class Monday but the students will be thrilled to see a lesson in Maori created in New Zealand being taught to students in the USA! If you haven't yet visited their wonderful class page then you can do so by clicking the link here.

Melville Intermediate - Waikato Lit Quiz 2011

Maddison Flavell, Kieran Hamid, Isaac Poole and myself went to St Pauls Collegiate to compete in the annual Literacy Quiz 2011.

We got inside, sat down and chose our double points category. The category we chose was adventure.

I was becoming nervous as the start came near. As we started I thought I was going to get all the questions wrong for our team.

The hardest category was probably Wolves because none of us had done any research on books about Wolves.

We ended up coming around the middle of the pack and we were really proud of ourselves for it. We all had a lot of fun and if we had the chance to compete again I think we all would.

Melville Intermediate - Counting to 1000 in Maori

This is the fourth and final video in the 'Maori Counting Series' for 2011.   The first video was the importance of the key numbers in the Maori Language, 1-10.  The second video created by our students deals with numbers from 10-25, and deals with the fact that there are no 'teen' numbers in Maori.  The third video dealt with the numbers from 25 to 100.   This video deals with 100 to 10,000! Its straight forward once you get the key numbers sorted, you need the key words in Maori for 100 and 1000, Kotahi Rau and Mano.   These videos as with all in the series have been created by Hayze, Shayley and Mackenzie, filmed at Melville Intermediate on Friday 10th June 2011.

Today two of our students, Hayze and Mackenzie were able to Skype with Room Six from Kilbirnie Primary School, to talk about Maori Language and go over the rules for the Maori Hand Game that we've posted the video for online here. Melville Intermediate - Hand Games for Maori Language Week 2

This is the second video in the series. This is a Maori Hand Game that is a co-ordination activity. Students have a series of five actions that they need to memorise and then repeat without error. If both students or groups of students can repeat them then the students or groups of students go through them again, repeating the process but faster, and continue to do so until someone makes a mistake. Your hosts for this activity Hayze and Mackenzie go through the five actions and then in additional bonus footage compete against each other to demonstrate the game. Filmed at Melville Intermediate on Tuesday 7th June 2011.

Melville Intermediate - Handball in New Zealand Part One

One of our favourite collaborations this year has been with Vonslid School in Denmark.  One of the things that we realised when comparing countries is that our version of 'Handball' is very different to theirs! We've had a group of students who have been learning the 'real' version of Handball, researching the rules and information and even giving it a go, so to speak (although we've discovered that our Gym isn't big enough and we don't have the court markings that we need).   This video is presented by Cullen and Bradley and is the beginning of their work on Handball! Filmed at Melville Intermediate on Monday 30th May 2011.
