Melville Intermediate - Wednesday Night Boys MIS Basketball

This is Daniel from Room Five's recount about his efforts in the Wednesday night Basketball competition at Fraser High School that finished last term.  Daniel wrote this as a recount for publication in his portfolio for the end of term.

Every Wednesday night at 6:00pm I represent Melville Intermediate School (M.I.S) in basketball along with 12 others and Fraser High in Hamilton so far we have won 3 games and lost 2 so we are going to the semi finals. The Basketball games go for 30 minutes on a running clock. The clock stops at half time which is 15 minutes for about 2 minutes then we play again for another 15 minutes, then that’s the end of the game. How the rules work in the competition is that if you get fouled and get the shot in it would be 3 points.

The only downs about Wednesday night basketball that I think of the competition, is I wish they made the matches 40 minutes and you would be able to do free throws other than that I really like playing basketball for the school because it helps me be better basketball player.

The best thing about Wednesday night basketball is that I’m mostly in the starring 5 and I get to have a lot of minutes on the court. Which I really like.

Update: The MIS Boys did make the semi-finals and were very unlucky to lose that semi-final to Maeroa Intermediate (Boys).  The MIS Boys team then played off for 3rd/4th in the competition against Whakawatea, a game that ended in a draw 34-34 with Melville scoring in the last minute.

Melville Intermediate Girls team ended their Term Two season playing against Flyers Nets in a play off in the 'B' grade.   Melville were able to turn around a 12 point loss to the Boys club team in week four to defeat them 38-22 in their final term two game.  Melville Intermediate Girls will be representing our school at the NZAIMS tournament in Tauranga upcoming in Term Three - from Monday 16th September to Friday 20th September.  This is the biggest sporting event in New Zealand with 189 schools attending in 2013 and twenty in Girls Basketball.  Mr Webb and the team will be onsite for the week and posting live from the event with the MIS results.

Melville Intermediate - Fried Bread

This video is something of a work in progress, later in the coming term (its currently the break between term two and term three) we've got the publishing of our tutorial videos for Maori Language Week 2013.  Room Five were looking at doing something special for this year.  We created a series of videos that are currently in production, but as we wanted to ensure that they had been extensively worked and re-worked before they were fully published and uploaded to this page and youtube.

Our Maori Nose Flute (Hongi Ihu) has been finished but we also have videos coming in Poi making.  We've also got a tutorial in the making of Fried Bread.  As an example of this the students of Room Two spent the last day of school having several special activities - one of which was Fried Bread making.  Whaea Dianne made thesee in class for students.  Filmed by Daniel from Room Five in Room Two on Friday 12th July 2013.

Melville Intermediate - Auckland Museum Recount

Auckland Museum Trip - Recount by Mary Anne from Room Seven.
Amazing trip to the museum on the way to the museum. I saw the sky tower that was a good cool and new experience. I saw a whole bunch of different animals like Pigs, Cows, Sheep, Bulls. We left at 8am and got back at 3:06pm but we left at 8 and got there at 9:50 so roughly about I hour and 50 minutes. When we got to the museum I got up and I had very sore legs and I had pins and needles they were so sore so we got up to the steps and the man greeted us in to the museum. So we all got to go and listen to the ancient Egypt stuff we did some activity’s  and I could not understand what he was saying but when we finished that lesson we had morning tea then we were allowed to go and look through everything in the museum. What caught my eye was the mummy it was scary and cool at the same time but it was in a  tomb behind glass. In the history section it was my favourite part of the museum. they need to make the kia room bigger the toilets were stunning the sinks where on an angle but I enjoyed the history  section the most. It was cool to go and spend time with my friends out of school and still learn at the same time I learnt a new bug called a dung beetle my goal next time is to stick with the group and to see everything.

Melville Intermediate - Maori Flute making process

Summary-Maori Flutes: Hongi Ihu

On Friday 5th July 2013 Room 2 and Matua Peter were making Maori flutes all the students had a piece of bamboo stick (10-20 cm). They used the file to scrape the bamboo to make it feel smooth and then they used a small square piece of sandpaper (but it wasnt too small). Then they used the electric saw to cut of the edge of the bamboo. After that they used the electric drill to drill little holes particularly where your knukles were to get the holesin the right place on the maori flute.

There were three videos created and filmed by Daniel and Wattana that explains the process that the students went though to make the flutes.   The first video is an explanation of the Tikana and the traditional use of the flute by Matua Pete.   He also provides an example of the flute playing towards the end of the video.  This was filmed by Wattana and Daniel at Melville Intermediate School on Monday 8th July 2013.

This second video is the explanation of the process as explained by Liam, a student from Room Two who was involved in the proces Maori Flute Making - Student Interview from myles webb on Vimeo.
s of creating the flutes.
Finally this third video is the students of Room Two creating the flutes in the school Woodwork Room.  This involves the use of machinery for the grinding of the bamboo and is quite noisey at times.  It also shows the students involved in the whol process.  This was filmed in the Melville Intermediate on Friday 5th July 2013

Melville Intermediate - Jamies Stage Challenge Recount

As I arrived at 6:48am in the morning I met Talya and Shirley out the front of Claudlands. About 10 minutes later Rexana, Rebekah and Deighton got here. A massive crowd came yelling around the corner. It was the rest of our group. We all rushed inside waiting for Miss Christian. When everyone was inside sitting down we called the roll and got ASB bands on. One of the Managers led us to our room which we shared with Girls High and Huntly Collage. We all settled in and the show began.

“Give me an ‘m’ ” “Yeah we got the ‘m’ we got the ‘m’ “, “Give me a ‘L’ “ Yeah we got the ‘L’ we got the ‘L’ “, “Give me a ‘V’” “Yeah we got the ‘V’ we got the ‘V’ “, And this is all that was heard coming up the corridor, We chanted all the way to the auditorium as loud as possible. When we got there we watched Girls High rehearsal and we cheered for everyone that came on stage. Even the backstage people. They were all so amazing and moved so swiftly. Once they had performed it was our turn to rehearse. We rehearsed 3 times and had heaps of fun.

We all rehearsed our hardest and tried our best. For the rest of the day we got to watch all the other schools rehearse and then all the J rocks performed for the rest of the day. The ASB crew came and visited and was having competitions to win free stuff such as Frisbees, Elephant money banks, Slinkys, Drink bottles and light up yoyos. I had heaps of fun stacking kash in’s on top of each other and others danced, competed in pyramid races and a scavenger hunt. The ASB crew were so fun to work with.

We were all in and out of the auditorium all day watching the J rocks perform. Everyone had a great time in the auditorium; I hung out with my friends and cheered for everyone. Even the people I didn’t know. We cheered all day long.

When the J rocks came on stage my friends and I went up to the middle seats to watch so we could see better. There were so many people below us and above. We cheered as loud as possible. All of their performances were awesome. Their costumes were so cool. Everything about their performances was detailed and had been put so many hours into. The J rocks did awesome and looked like they had enjoyed every second of it.

We got called for a meeting in the auditorium and we had an awesome dance party. Once our totally cool dance party finished, we sat back down to listen to the host. He reminded us about the lines and that all the teachers (1 from each school) had to come onto stage and that they had to dance to music and when it stopped they had to stand on a star and had to pick it up and It had a number on it. When Miss Christian picked hers up it had 13 on it. So we were last. We went back to the room and relaxed.

We all sat and relaxed for the rest of the night then at about 8:00pm we started getting ready to go. War was getting their makeup on and getting gathered up to go. Wind(my group) was next we had white make with blue and silver smudges of paint on our cheeks. Our hair was teased and we had ribbons on our wrists and in our hair around the hair ties. We used hairspray to keep our hair in place and our hair was literally the size of an exercise ball. No I’m joking. Maybe I was exaggerating a little. Well anyway you get the message. Our hair looked super crazy.

One by one the performers performed and we waited patiently in our room. Well it seemed like days waiting for our turn. But really it was only 2 hours. When Huntley Collage came back from their performance we cheered loudly and same with Girls High. After that time seemed to go faster and our time to shine was coming closer. We were getting more excited. Our room was getting too loud and we got told to be quiet.

We were going to perform in 10 minutes so we had a meeting with our group with Miss Christian. She said we had to try our hardest.

10 minutes later we were out on the side of the stage, nervously waiting. The curtains closed and we were sent off stage. As we wait for Cody to talk about our performance we were all shaking and whispering to each other. The curtains open and silence…..’Bub Boom Bub Boom’. The music started and we were ready to go. We did awesome. We all put 100% effort into the dance and danced our hearts out.

After the performance we walked off stage and walked nosily into our room. All of us chattering excitedly. It felt so good to have done it all awesomely.

We relaxed for about 5 minutes then we had to walk into the auditorium for the awards to be handed out. As we waited, friends came down to say how good we were. None of my family was actually at the Claudland’s event centre to watch me, but still I had an awesome time. I was glad with what it turned out to be.

WOW! Did we get heaps of awards? I cannot count how many we got. Well I could but I can’t be bothered. Each time we got awarded with an award, we cheered so so loud. We also cheered for others. Jackson, a boy behind me said that its good to cheer for others when it came to the placing’s so we did. “In third place comes…….. Huntley College". We cheered loud as. In second came Girls High. “In first place is………. “MELVILLE HIGH SCHOOL” OMG! Did we cheer or what! I couldn’t even hear the guy talking, And he had a microphone. So many of us burst into tears. Including me. But let’s keep that between you and me. Anyway….. We were amazed; all of our hard work paid off massively.

What we got told later that evening was that so many of us practiced over 100 hours. Just for a 8 minutes performance….. That’s amazing.

I had a wonderful time and enjoyed every minute. I will miss all of my friends that I made and I would like to thank Miss Christian, Cian and Nick for letting me have this amazing, fantastic, wonderful, awesome, marvellous and mind-blowing experience. I had the time of my life and I hop that everyone else enjoyed it too.

When I got home that I night it was 12:00am and my hair felt like straw and it was really messy. I got to sleep at 1:00am. I woke in the morning at 10:45am. I think everyone should experience this and even though but is very tiring it is so so so so so worth it.

I LOVED IT!!!!! I HAD THE BEST TIME EVER!

Melville Intermediate - Matariki Summary by Owen and Josh

Matariki is a constellation of seven stars that represent the Maori New Year which takes place in late May or early June. It occurs just prior to sunrise. In tradition Matariki was a season to celebrate and prepare for the New Year coming.

A lot of the produce of the preparation was given to the god of food Rongo.

The constellation was important for navigating and timing the seasons. Matariki has an English name: Pleiades star cluster.

The constellation Matariki has seven sisters their names are: Electra, Maia, Taygete, Alcyone, Celaeno, Asterope and Merope.

Matariki is featured often you just don’t notice it for instance does anyone know the Subaru logo, well it has seven stars and those stars are the one (seven) and only Matariki stars. There are many paintings of them in museums (and even more not so great attempts).
