Melville Intermediate - School Ski Trip 2013

This week nine students from Room Five, Melville Intermediate were lucky enough to participate in the School Ski Trip to the snow.  This is a recount written by Chloe from Room Five, about day one.

On Sunday we got to the school and there was one person there.   Then I got there and after about everyone started to get there.  Nearly everybody was there.  Mr Keegan told us to be at school at 1:30pm and he was seven minutes late.   We went into his room and he called out everyones name and everyone was there so we loaded up in our cars and said goodbye to everyone and off we went.

We stated to listen to some songs.  I was in Bianca's car her car was cool.  We went to sleep (not the driver) casuse we were in the car for three hours.  We woke up and were there "yaaa".  Everyone saw a little bit of snow and some people started to have a snowball fight.  Then we had to get our stuff and carry it up a big hill wil lots of rocks.   Everyone was like "are you for real?" and Mr Keegan was like yup and we were like owwwwww.  So we all hardened up and we carried it up.  It was so hard we got in and we unpacked and we were called for dinner.  We went up the steps and Mr Keegan have some instructions and then we had dinner.  It was butter chicken. Then when we were finished w
e had to go back to our rooms and we chilled out there for a while.  About ten minutes later we went and had pudding.   We had Ice Cream, Fruit Salad and Chocolate Moose.   We all had tweny minutes until bed time so we had a few games and then it was time to go to bed.

Winter Olympics!
Day 1:
On Monday the 12th August 2013 36 students including me went to Totara Springs, Matamata to represent Melville Intermediate in our Winter Olympics Sports Camp.  We stayed there from Monday-Friday the 16th August. When the bus got to camp everyone was so excited. When we hoped out of the bus there was a man with a video recording us getting out so then he could put it on the daily highlights of the week. After everyone got their bags we went to our cabins where we set up our beds. There were 2 rooms for the girls. In my room there was Bria, Aleesha, Alanis and I and everyone else was in the other room. In my room there were 2 beds and 1 bunk bed and in the other room there were 6 bunks. After everyone was set up the cross-country runners had to get ready for their run. After the cross-country the golfers, archery and shooters had to get ready. The cross-country track was long but only 1 kid from Melville got in the top 10. Both of the golfers came 2nd. After all of that we had to go to the swimming pool for the swimmers. For swimming we came 2nd in boys breaststroke.  Later that night after dinner we played Scramball. We got 1st equal with Te Puke.

Day 3:
On Wednesday morning after breakfast I straight away had to go get ready for my tennis game that we had to finish. We ended up loosing the semi finals but we were happy that we made it that far. After my tennis game I had to get changed into my netball top so then I could play my games of netball that I had. My first game of netball that I had that morning we lost our game. We won the boys basketball, the cheer and we also won the girls volleyball. It was a long night in the end.

Day 5:
When I woke up I thought oh man it’s the last day of Winter Olympics. I get up and pack all of my bags up once I had finished that we went for breakfast after breakfast we went back to our rooms for the last clean up to make sure we had everything all packed in our bag. When that was finished we went and put our bags in the chapel where we meet before the athletics started. For athletics there was javelin, discus, jumping and shot-put. I did the jumping one because I wanted to do something. After athletics it was time for lunch. We had a good lunch break. After the break we had prize giving. We ended up winning 8 trophies and we won 7 certificates for runner-up. We made it into 12 semi finals and ended up in about 10 final. It was a really long tiring week but we made it through with a few injures including me but we still got through it all. I would love to do it again another time.

Melville Intermediate - Wednesday Night Boys MIS Basketball

This is Daniel from Room Five's recount about his efforts in the Wednesday night Basketball competition at Fraser High School that finished last term.  Daniel wrote this as a recount for publication in his portfolio for the end of term.

Every Wednesday night at 6:00pm I represent Melville Intermediate School (M.I.S) in basketball along with 12 others and Fraser High in Hamilton so far we have won 3 games and lost 2 so we are going to the semi finals. The Basketball games go for 30 minutes on a running clock. The clock stops at half time which is 15 minutes for about 2 minutes then we play again for another 15 minutes, then that’s the end of the game. How the rules work in the competition is that if you get fouled and get the shot in it would be 3 points.

The only downs about Wednesday night basketball that I think of the competition, is I wish they made the matches 40 minutes and you would be able to do free throws other than that I really like playing basketball for the school because it helps me be better basketball player.

The best thing about Wednesday night basketball is that I’m mostly in the starring 5 and I get to have a lot of minutes on the court. Which I really like.

Update: The MIS Boys did make the semi-finals and were very unlucky to lose that semi-final to Maeroa Intermediate (Boys).  The MIS Boys team then played off for 3rd/4th in the competition against Whakawatea, a game that ended in a draw 34-34 with Melville scoring in the last minute.

Melville Intermediate Girls team ended their Term Two season playing against Flyers Nets in a play off in the 'B' grade.   Melville were able to turn around a 12 point loss to the Boys club team in week four to defeat them 38-22 in their final term two game.  Melville Intermediate Girls will be representing our school at the NZAIMS tournament in Tauranga upcoming in Term Three - from Monday 16th September to Friday 20th September.  This is the biggest sporting event in New Zealand with 189 schools attending in 2013 and twenty in Girls Basketball.  Mr Webb and the team will be onsite for the week and posting live from the event with the MIS results.

Melville Intermediate - Waikato Kids Lit Quiz 2013

‘WOOO, YEAH, AWESOME!!!!!!’ All the kids in the chapel at St Paul’s Collegiate cheered because they got the first question in the alieus section right. It was the night of Lit Quiz and 4-8 kids from schools all around the Waikato had joined together on the 16th of May, to do the International Kids Lit Quiz. Kids Lit Quiz is a competition for kids all around the world who are really good at reading. It is a fun competition and kids and Adults both enjoy it because adults get to win prizes as well as the kids. So anyway we were sitting there with big toothy grins on our faces because we had finished hearing the answers for the alieus section and we had a pretty good score.
The night went by fast but we got pretty good scores in alieus, constructions, authors, myths and legends and pop culture. We had 2 Melville Intermediate School groups there and my group, (group 2) bet the other team, we came 27th out of 54 schools and our overall score was 52 out of 100.

You can find out more information about the Kids Lit Quiz from their website here.

Melville Intermediate - Go Karts at Camp by Jozarn

Shaun taught me how drift and he taught me how to do a donut.  It felt cool when I started to drift on the track.  I made it into the finals (of the Camp Go Kart competition) where I had to race against Mr Willis.  He made me eat his dust.  Tane (from Room Six) he made the fastest time and his time was 47 seconds.  Nathan M, he was the man at drifting, Liam he also ate Mr Willis dust.

This is Jozarns recount about the Go Karting at the Narrows Camp last week, Jozarn brainstormed and planned his writing, edited it, and this is the published  version.  The video that features the Go Kart racing was created by footage shot by Jamie and Elizabeth and was edited and put together by Cody, Owen with Nathan H overseeing it.  Filmed on location at the Narrows Camp, 4th to the 6th March 2013.

Melville Intermediate - Bianca Activity Week Recount Part Two

Thisi is the conclusion to Bianca's recount about activity week.

we made some more cards. I made a Christmas card for my niece, big brother, mother, father and big sister. I also made a congratulations card to my big sister and brother in-law, because they are having a baby next year. When I finished all of my cards I helped to clean up the floor. After we had finished cleaning up the floor it was lunch time. For lunch we ordered pizza. Jamie and I had ham and cheese with barbeque sauce on top. Lunch went so fast it was not funny, but Jamie and I were happy because after lunch we were doing something really cool. After lunch we went to the library to watch a movie. Jamie and I brought our beanbags, it was so comfy. The movie we watched was mirror, mirror. We didn’t have any sound for about half an hour. But when we got our sound we started to watch the movie. We only got to watch 3 quarters of the movie. When the bell went we had to go back to the sewing room to get all of our stuff.  Jamie and my hands were really full because we had to take our beanbags, jar, cards, bag and canvas. But we put our cards into our bag and so we only had to take our canvas, jar and beanbag. Once Jamie walked out-side she lost grip of her jar and it fell to the ground. I had put my jar into my bag so then it would be safe. When Jamie dropped her jar all I heard was a bang and I looked back and Jamie’s jar was on the ground. I power walked over to her and helped her to clean it up. Once the jar was cleaned up we went out to the front gate, Jamie hopped into her car and I was standing out-side waiting for my mum but she didn’t come so Jamie’s mum Gail offered a ride to her place.

Melville Intermediate - Actiivty Week Recount Jamie

Wednesday was really fun we made one thing each block.  In the first block we made bath bombs.  Bianca and I paired up and we made bath bombs orange.  They were meant to be yellow, but I guess we put too much colour in.  We to cut two tea bags open and sprinkle the tea in.  We picked cranberry and strawberry tea.  Mrs De Waard told us to put in essence in as well, so Bianca picked lemon essence.  After we mixed it together we got a paua shell that had glad wrap around it each, as well as an egg carton each.  Both of us sprinkled our mix into the paua shells and egg cartons and left them to set overnight.  In second block everyone made a friendship bracelet each.  I took ages to get our colours and to cut them the right length.  I made a friendship bracelet called swirl and as you made it , it would create a swirl as I go.  Everyone wanted to them at morning tea time be we couldn't because we had to go outside.  In third block we made icing sculptures for our muffins the next day.  We picked our colour and first we made a rose.  It was tricky but I managed to make a really good one.   There were cutters, shapes, and knives.  We could use them to make our icing sculptures.  We had heaps of fun that day!

Melville Intermediate - PrEP Recount Douglas

On the start of PrEP (Primary Enterprise Program, our Schools Market Day - Mr Webb) we didn't sell anything so we had to drop the price of our items to twenty MiSMs (Melville Intermediate School Money).  Our first customer then brought one of our wind instruments.  After time lots of our wind instruments were bought by our customers.  We had only 11 instruments left.  When it was five o'clock we dropped the price further to 15 MISMs.   Later on lots and lots of customers came and brought almost all of our wind instruments.  When all of the customers had left we only had two instruments left and Nathan H's Mum brought one of those.  I had been demonstrating the instruments by spinning them, I got tired of spinning the instrument so I went and bought a slushy and I got a free sherbert from my mate.   After that I went on to the Haunted House and I got a free slime.   When I came out of the Haunted House I went back to my business.  When I came back I saw Deighton's Dad buy the last one.  After we were sold out I started watching some guys play some Ps2 games.

Melville Intermediate - PrEP Recount

On Thursday 25th of October 2012 we were preparing for our PrEP day which happened on Friday 26th of October 2012.  We didn't just start on Thursday but we started to organize for PrEP on the term before this term.  We started to get into our groups and talk about what we are going to sell on our PrEP day.  Our groups name was Sugar Power and our group members were Icis, Asinate, Kayla and Joseph.  On the four weeks before PrEP day we decided to sell the following things: sherbet, popcorn, lollie kebabs, raro, raffle tickets and drink.  All the stuff that we sell we decided to sell them all for 5 MiSMs each.

The PrEP time was 4:00pm-6:00pm so that meant we have to make the things organized before the PrEP time.   We created a sign for our group.  We had to make the popcorn, the sherbet and make the lollie kebabs.  Myself and Kayla were making the popcorn and the sherbet and Joseph was creating the sign and making the lollie kebabs by himself because Icis wasn't here.

After school we finished everything that we had to do.   We were wondering what else we could do so we helped the Scary Movie group if they wanted help and they did need help so we helped them to set up their store.   When we finished helping them it was time to start setting up and doing our store outside of Room Five.   Kayla and I went to the design room to get our table.  After that we set up everything outside Room Five.   There was already some people walking around outside.

Now the PrEP Market Day was starting and the people were using their MISMs to buy stuff from the shops.  After that we had lots of customers and most of the people were buying popcorn.   It was lots of fun.
