Melville Intermediate - NZAIMS 2013 Recount

On Sunday 15th of September the Melville Intermediate Girls Basketball team went to Tauranga to compete in the NZ AIMS Games.   Later that night we went to the opening ceremony.   The opening ceremony was cool.

Monday was our first game was against Aquinas College lost by 1 point.   We won our other games later that day against Dio from Auckland and Kristin School from Aukland.  It was tough but we still got back up and won our games 40-10 against Dio and 35-28 against Kristin. There were a lot of fouls  in these games.

Tuesday we played Saint Cuthberts College from Auckland and Northcross Intermediate we won both of those games. There were a lot of rep players which made it difficult but it was challenging and fun for our team. We were excited to win those two games.  The other game on Tuesday was against Tauranga Intermediate this was a tough game and they played really well against us and unfortunatly we lost 35-19.

Wednesday we went to bayfair shopping center, because we only had 1 game late that day.we played a very hard game losing to Te Kura Te Koutou, who eventually won the whole competition.  They beat us 12-60.

Thursday we playerd off for 7th-8th place unfortunatly losing against The Knox school from Australia.  We thought that we would have won this game however we were only just behind at half time and the game ended up very close.   The Knox ended up winning 23-28.

We tried our best and played hard to represent Melville Intermediate  at the nationals.  Overall we came fourth in our pool which we were happy with and there were 17 teams in the competition altogether.

Melville Intermediate - Girls Basketball heading to NZAIMS 2013

Our Girls Basketball team is heading to Tauranga for the NZAIMS Games starting this Sunday.  We've spent the year preparing for the tournament playing on Tuesday nights at the YMCA on Pembrooke Street in Hamilton.  Our Girls team has gone on a thirteen game undefeated streak during term one and two, to playing games in the 'B' pool against Boys teams and Club teams.  Our final game on Tuesday took place against Flyers Lakers.   Earlier this term we'd been defeated 22-25 in a close tight encounter.   In this game Melville were able to dominate from the outset, taking a 25-6 half time lead, before winning 39-23.  Filmed by Maia and the bench.

Melville Intermediate - Wednesday Night Boys MIS Basketball

This is Daniel from Room Five's recount about his efforts in the Wednesday night Basketball competition at Fraser High School that finished last term.  Daniel wrote this as a recount for publication in his portfolio for the end of term.

Every Wednesday night at 6:00pm I represent Melville Intermediate School (M.I.S) in basketball along with 12 others and Fraser High in Hamilton so far we have won 3 games and lost 2 so we are going to the semi finals. The Basketball games go for 30 minutes on a running clock. The clock stops at half time which is 15 minutes for about 2 minutes then we play again for another 15 minutes, then that’s the end of the game. How the rules work in the competition is that if you get fouled and get the shot in it would be 3 points.

The only downs about Wednesday night basketball that I think of the competition, is I wish they made the matches 40 minutes and you would be able to do free throws other than that I really like playing basketball for the school because it helps me be better basketball player.

The best thing about Wednesday night basketball is that I’m mostly in the starring 5 and I get to have a lot of minutes on the court. Which I really like.

Update: The MIS Boys did make the semi-finals and were very unlucky to lose that semi-final to Maeroa Intermediate (Boys).  The MIS Boys team then played off for 3rd/4th in the competition against Whakawatea, a game that ended in a draw 34-34 with Melville scoring in the last minute.

Melville Intermediate Girls team ended their Term Two season playing against Flyers Nets in a play off in the 'B' grade.   Melville were able to turn around a 12 point loss to the Boys club team in week four to defeat them 38-22 in their final term two game.  Melville Intermediate Girls will be representing our school at the NZAIMS tournament in Tauranga upcoming in Term Three - from Monday 16th September to Friday 20th September.  This is the biggest sporting event in New Zealand with 189 schools attending in 2013 and twenty in Girls Basketball.  Mr Webb and the team will be onsite for the week and posting live from the event with the MIS results.

Melville Intermediate - 2012 Highlights

Over the next few weeks we will be looking back at some of the highlights from 2012 selected by our students.  This recount is written about the NZAIMS tournament, which is the national sporting tournament (New Zealands largest) for Intermediate Students held each year in Tauranga.  Melville Intermediate has entered Girls Basketball for the past four years finishing in the top four spots for four consecutive years.  This is the recount about out 2012 efforts that was published in 'Reflections' the Melville Intermediate School Magazine

Our first Tauranga NZAIMS Game of 2012 was against the Knox School from Melbourne Australia.  It was the first time that any Australian Schools had been competing in the NZAIMS games and both teams were nervous before we played.  There was only one point in the game at half time and they led 15-16.  In the second half it was really close as well, and unfortunately they just beat us 32-34.  We knew we could still make the quarter finals but to do that we would have to win our other pool games.

On Monday afternoon we played Te Wharekura o Tauranga Moana, this was a much stronger game for us and we beat them 41-10.  On Tuesday we played Ross Intermediate who were unbeaten and defeated them 34-9 and then we played Bethlehem College in our last pool game and beat them 55-6.  This qualified us for the quarter finals which we were very pleased with.

Wednesday was quarter finals and semi-finals day.  We played against Tauranga Intermediate in the Quarter Finals.  They were unbeaten and are the largest Intermediate in New Zealand, as well as one of the tournament host schools.   The game was tied at 16-16 at half time and we were able to pull away in the second half winning 30-23.  This is the third time in four years that we’ve knocked Tauranga out of the competition.

That had qualified us for the semi-finals when we had to take on Kaitoa Middle School.  We’d lost to them by a point in a warm up tournament in Rotorua in June, however they were winning every game at the NZAIMS tournament by 60 to a 100 points and looked very strong.  The game was close until half way through the first half when they started to pull away.  We tried to get back into the game but they had too much of a lead and Kaitoa won 30-47.  They went onto win the final.

That left us playing for 3rd and 4th and because of the other results we had to play The Knox School from Melbourne again.  We were very excited for a chance of getting medals and also happy to have a chance to try and beat the Knox who had beaten us in the first game.  This time the result wasn’t close and we beat them 38-22 meaning that Melville Intermediate came 3rd in the tournament out of 18 teams.

Thank you to everyone who played in the team this year: Kobe, Amethyst, Praise, Tia, Jess, Lonita, Anna, Maia, Arahia and Te Mahine.  Special thank you to Chareena (Kobe’s Mum) for her awesome coaching.

Melville Intermediate - AIMS 2012 Games Summary

Melville Intermediate 2012 NZAIMS Games results started on Monday 10th September 2012. The Melville Intermediate Schools Girls Basketball Teams first game was against The Knox School from Melbourne.  It was an incredibly close game, going down to the last thirty seconds, the Knox however emerged victorious winning 32-34.  Melville then had to pick them up for an afternoon game against Te Kura o Moana Tauranga.  Melville scored their first win of the competition 41-10.  Knowing that the quarter finals could be reached with two wins on Tuesday the Melville team were desperate for good performances against Ross Intermediate from New Plymouth and Bethlehem College.  Ross were defeated in the morning 34-9 and Bethlehem College were beaten 55-6.

This left Melville Intermediate as runners up in pool b, facing a play off game against one of the tournament hosts, the unbeaten Tauranga Intermediate School.  In a quarter final that was tied 14-14 at half time Melville proved to strong for Tauranga, knocking them out for the second consecutive year in the quater finals this time 30-23.

Melville had then the sternest of challenges in the Semi-Finals, Kaitoa Middle School from Rotorua.   We'd played Kaitoa in their Rotorua Tournament in June, and lost by a point, however Kaitoa were dominating this years AIMS tournament winning their games by huge margins.  It wasn't meant to be for Melville, Kaitoa, the eventual NZAIMS Champions, running away with the game 30-47.

That left Melville with a final game for 2012 for third and fourth place, against The Knox School from Melbourne.  Both teams were desperate for the medals that came with third place, and while there was only six points in the game at half time, Melville Intermediate were able to win convincingly 38-22 making them third for 2012.  Kobe Hawea as a result of her outstanding play throughout the tournament was named in the tournament team, a feat that she repeated from 2011.

This year there are over 150 schools competing in 15 different events, with over 5500 Y7 and Y8 students competing. The tournament is the show piece for Intermediate Age Sport in New Zealand, and there are schools fom Australia competing for the first time. Melville Intermediate are currently preparing by playing on Tuesday nights in a local basketball league. However we're preparing for the competition by playing against club sides and boys teams. Following wins against Te Awamutu Intermediate and St Pius School our girls looked to make it three in a row against the Flyers 'Heat' Basketball team this past Tuesday, 29th May from The YMCA on Pembroke Street. The video was filmed from the subs bench during the game!
