As part of the Powhiri to welcome new students Mr Yardley, our Woodwork teacher, welcomed students by recognizing the contribution of the first European settlers to our area from Scotland, where the name Melville comes from. Mr Yardley in addition to being a teacher at Melville Intermediate is also special as he was a foundation pupil at Melville Intermediate School from nearly fifty years ago. Levi and Liam from Room Five went and filmed his performance on the school fields.

Melville Intermediate - Levi's Ski Recount
On the last day of school on Friday night me and my family went to Rarotonga. It was freezing cold when we left New Zealand. The plane ride was three and a half hours long and we arrived at Rarotonga at 10:40pm. Once we got off the plane it was very warm. In the airport we had to go through customs and then go to a backpackers for the night. That morning my friend and I got up and went for a swim straight away. We took a bus to our resort and went to our rooms. Once we had unloaded our bags we went for a swim again. The pool at the resort had a water slide. Then we went to get our three scooters and our one car. Riding on a scooter is so much fun. In the car you don't have to wear a seatbelt and you can sit on the back of the car. For the next three days we snorkelled everyday. On Sunday, which is New Zealand's Monday we went on Captain Tama's cruise. It was really awesome. On Monday we went to the markets. There were a lot of things to buy. On Tuesday there we went snorkelling again and then on Wednesday we went on an island safari. We went up giant mountains and down big slopes. Friday was a sleepy day and at quarter to one we left Rarotonga to take a four hour plane ride to return to New Zealand.
As part of our Term Four work, each student in Room Five has to write a recount for their portfolio about an activity that they were involved with for the Term Three holiday break.

Melville Intermediate - Bone Carving Explanation
Those of you who have been following our page will know that we have been preparing a very special present for the students from Vonslid School in Denmark. They sent us a wonderful gift of T-Shirts that were related to Handball, the national sport of Denmark. In return we thought long and hard about what we could send them. As Maori culture is very important to our school, Melville Intermediate employs Matua Peter, and one of his specialities is Bone Carving. We've been working for a week and a half preparing the gift, working through the stages and this video explains the designs we've created and the process that's been gone through. This is video one of two, filmed by Levi from Room Five on Tuesday 15th May 2012.

Melville Intermediate - Levi's Drumming Recount
For the past few weeks I have been taking time out of school to play Drums. The first day I was so excited to see who my teacher was. His name is Adam. The first thing we did was name the Drums and then hit them. The names of the drums are the bass drum, the snare drum, the little tom,the big tom,the floor tom,the crash cymbal and the ride cymbal. For the rest of the lesson Adam taught me a really cool beat. On the second week we read music. My teacher showed me how to read percussion music, the 3rd week I read music more and got a book and a DVD. In the book there are lessons, out of 12 I am up to lesson 5. Next week I am going to see what I am doing.
