Melville Intermediate - Mihi Explanation

A Mihi is an introduction to tell people who you are and where you come from.  A Mihi is used when you meet or greet someone or a group of people.  There are different things contained in each Mihi, but these are some of the common things:

  • Ko _____________ the maunga (the mountain nearest to where you were born)
  • Ko _____________ the river (nearest to where you were born)
  • Ko _____________ te iwi (tribe you associate with)
  • Ko _____________ te hapu (sub tribe)
  • Ko _____________ te Waka (traditional Maori Waka associated with your area)
  • Ko _____________ taku matua (name of your Dad, their first name)
  • Ko _____________ taku mama (name of your Mum, their first name)
  • Ko _____________ taku ingoa (your first name)
Then you finish you Mihi with a saying, like Tena Koutou, Tena koutou, tena koutou katoa.  The video below is me going through all of the steps.

Melville Intermediate - Simple Maori Greetings

As regular followers of this class page will be aware we've been using it to post videos and skype with classrooms teaching Maori language. This video has been created for Pukekohe East Primary School, one of the classrooms were working with. They've got junior students and were looking for some Maori phrases to learn to converse with each other. In this video filmed by Sita and presented by Kaea you need to list for the following Maori Phrases:

  • Tino Pai - I'm Good
  • Kei te pehea koe? - How are you?
  • Kia Ora - Hello/Hi
  • Ka Kite - Bye/See You!
  • Miri Kirihimete - Merry Christmas!
The words will appear on screen in English and Maori at the correct time so you can learn and practise with the presenters!
