Melville Intermediate - Goodbye Mr Barlett

On Thursday 15th December 2010 Melville Intermediate held the first of their two 2010 Prize Giving Assemblies. It marked a sad occassion for the school as well as we farewelled a number of staff who are leaving our school such as Mrs Graham, Mr Day and Mrs Taylor. Also leaving us to take up the role of Principal in Aitutaki, the Cook Islands was Mr Barlett. He farewelled the school by way of a special performance, performing with Donovan, Samuel and Mansun a version of Albatross the instrumental song by Fleetwood Mac. Good luck Mr Barlett and thank you for all the work that you have done for the students of Melville Intermediate School.

Melville Intermediate - School Ball Part Two

The final major event of 2010 for students of Melville Intermediate was our School Ball. In preparation for this students spent a term preparing for the learning the dances. On the night the students were in awe of the amazing preparations and hard work that had been put in by the Y8 classroom teachers. We had a sound box crew of Y7 students who shot some recording during the evening, using the 'night shot' camera and this is the second in the series of Ball Highlights videos. Shot by Gareth and Shaylee on December 15th 2010.

Melville Intermediate - Counting in Maori

In this new series of videos Ora and Kaea take you through the process of counting in the Maori Language. In the Maori language the key numbers are one through ten (which the video for will be uploaded tomorrow). There are no 'teen' numbers like in English so 'Eleven' is ten plus one. This is explained by the students so listen carefully to the pronunciation. Filmed at Melville Intermediate on Tuesday 14th December 2010.

Two days ago the CPA and the school choir went to Selwyn Sunningdale to do a performance. We we arrived we were all excited to just get in and perform our best. We walked in and got our costumes ready then Whaea Guzzo said "get ready". Our first number was Maori. We rocked it! When we finished the Maori performance Mrs Stewart said "although the crowd is small still raise the roof!". We went through a couple more numbers then we sung 'Silent Night' and it was so beautiful to hear! Report written by Eva Room Two.

Melville Intermediate - CPA at Alphacare

Melville Intermediate CPA and Choir Groups performed at two retirement villages, Hilda Ross and Alpha Care. CPA's part of the show consisted of Kapahaka, Hawaiian, Cook Island and Samoan Dancing. As CPA dancers changed into their fantastic costuming the Choir group sang songs such as The Rose, Ba Ba and Getting Stronger. We also had Karlene who danced with different Hawaiian implements.

For our final number we ended on a Christmas note by singing 'Silent Night'. We saw lots of smiles and tears from our elderly audience. That made us feel really proud and happy that our school took time to go and spread some Christmas Cheer by sharing our talents with them.

Melville Intermediate - Photostory Creation Story

This is Lana's Photostory demonstrating the work that a group of students has completed with Matua Hone on the Maori Creation Story.

Bjork wrote this report about working with Matua Hone. When we were with Matua Hone we did things like learning how to play Maori instruments. When we learnt how to play them we played them in a drama about Rangi and Papa and the six brothers and the baby. I had to play the Puririhua and I didn't want Rangi and Papa together (in the story) and when they got separated I went with the Father.

Nathalie wrote this. A few weeks ago we got to have a new teacher called Matua Hone. He was really cool and fun. Matua was here for four weeks. In that four weeks Matua Hone had a drama class. In that drama group there was Lana, Kelly, Chase, Kieran, Isaac, Shania, Samm, Tereina, Bjork, Benita and me. We had to act out this drama for a book called 'The Children of Rangi and Papa'. We all a a character each. Each actor had a special power for example Ruaumoko had earth power and he was me. We all played an instrument each for our background noise. We put the instruments together with our drama and thats how we made our drama.

Melville Intermediate - 2010 Edublogs Nomination

We were very humbled today to see the short-list for the 2010 Edublog Awards, and to find that our class page had been short listed for best use of visual/video.

This is a huge honour for this site, and first we'd like to thank the three sites that nominated us, Mrs Bee from the Super Scoopers, Stephen from the Ins and Outs and Miss W. This is a huge award to be nominated for, we're currently one of three New Zealand sites that have made the short-list, so we'd also like to congratulate the Ins and Outs and Room 17 at Bailey Road School.

But it doesn't end there, some of the other class pages that we've networked with in the past year are also on the short-list including Mr Chamberlain from the USA and Mrs Yollis from Califorina.

You can click here to see the entire list of nominations or click here specifically to see the finalists for Best Educational Use of Video.

Voting Closes on December 14th and only opened today so its a very exciting time for everyone in Room Eight!

Melville Intermediate - Super Scoopers Room 7

Room 8 Dance Collaboration

The Room 7 Super Scoopers are making a collaborative dance with different classes and blogs around the world.

The song they are dancing to is “I Got A Feeling” by “The Black Eyed Peas”. The song is about 3:40 to 3:50 minutes/seconds. There are a lot of people collaborating on this dance, so the dance we are to do should be about 10-15 seconds long.

It is a limited space of time. Just because there isn’t that much time for us, we still have a lot to do practising the dance.

The Room 7 Super Scoopers are doing a live performance in 2 weeks time. They have been skyping with other classes teaching others how to do the dance.

Mr Miller Classroom in Califorina have already completed their contribution to this video, its really worth seeing what they have done and you can view their video by clicking here.

Melville Intermediate - Simple Maori Greetings

As regular followers of this class page will be aware we've been using it to post videos and skype with classrooms teaching Maori language. This video has been created for Pukekohe East Primary School, one of the classrooms were working with. They've got junior students and were looking for some Maori phrases to learn to converse with each other. In this video filmed by Sita and presented by Kaea you need to list for the following Maori Phrases:

  • Tino Pai - I'm Good
  • Kei te pehea koe? - How are you?
  • Kia Ora - Hello/Hi
  • Ka Kite - Bye/See You!
  • Miri Kirihimete - Merry Christmas!
The words will appear on screen in English and Maori at the correct time so you can learn and practise with the presenters!

Melville Intermediate - Maori Creation Story

In November 2010 I had the privilege of working with some students while on practicum at Melville Intermediate School. This group of Room 8 students studied the Māori Creation Story – Ranginui and Papatūānuku. The students learnt by listening and reading the creation story, using artworks to depict the kaitiaki (guardians / Gods) and learning about each kaitiaki in Te Reo Māori. Collaboration between Matua Hone and the students enabled a music piece to be set against the re-enactment drama that the students performed. The majority of the music soundtrack was Taonga Puoro (Māori musical instruments), the only exceptions being the heartbeat and the eruption sound at the end. The students played an instrument and their sounds can be heard within the music track. A fantastic group of students to work with and the results show that.
Mauri ora, Matua Hone.

Rainbows End by Kelly Ho
Fun. That’s a word that would describe most of the things that we did yesterday on Tuesday 23rd of November. The Y7 Big Day Out. The rides I went on were the Gold Rush, the Invader, Pirate Ship, Corkscrew Roller Coaster, Log Flume, Fear Fall and Powersurge. I went on the rides with Lana, Samm, Shania, Nathalie and Tereina.
During the day I bought some Candy Floss for three dollars. I ate it before going on the Fearfall. When I got off the Fearfall I felt fine, but later I started feeling sick. I still managed to go on the Power Surge. We had a private pinic area booked called El Dorado.
We had pink tickets around our wrists. Our departure time was around 8:10am and we arrived at Rainbows End at 10:00am. At 12:00pm we had to sign back in for lunch. We regrouped again around 2:00pm then we left for school. That was my first time at Rainbows End but like people say theres a first time for everything.

Yesterday we all went to Rainbows End and it was fun. We first got there we had to line up in the car park with all the other schools. We then got in our Picnic spot before we moved off. We went to the Gold Rush first, Annalize, Teegan, Rachel went on there but it looked a bit scary for me so I didn’t go on it. Then we went onto the litter Fearfall, then the Dragon ride. Then we went on the big Fear Fall. I got up the top and I said to myself “this is it, I can’t get down’. Then bang! I was screaming it was so much fun. I went on the Corkscrew Roller Coaster. We got our seats then the ride started. The first bit was the hill, it went clack, clack then whoosh! Suddenly we went into a loop , then it was all over! Then we went back to the picnic area and back to school.

Melville Intermediate - Y7 BDO 2010

Rainbows End by Ridwan Mohammed
Yesterday on Tuesday 23rd November we went to Rainbows End as a school. It was awesome. I loved the Fearfall. Teegan went on the Fearfall three times! Tamara and Isla went on the Fearfall once with us. It was so scary being on the Fearfall. The Power Surge was so scary I screamed my head off. Teegan and I had to make a deal that I didn’t scream the next time. I did it. Watea was with us she was screaming on the Power Surge. I was just laughing at her. Next we went on the Roller Coaster and that was fun. Teegan and I made a bet with the attendant that we wouldn’t hold on at all so we didn’t. We did it two times and loved it! Then we went on the Gold Rush. Teegan and Tamara were in the front and Isla and myself were in the back. It was so much fun. Teegan was laughing so hard that she cried. Then we went to the Candy House and had three packets of Candy Floss before getting back on the bus and returning to school.

On Friday students of Melville Intermediate School are going to connect with students in Burham School in Christchurch. Although there's a distance of over 900km between our two schools we will be communicating together.

Melville Intermediate School has two digital Maori Classrooms, and three of these students spent a few moments before they started Technology this afternoon creating a short video with the phrases that Burham School would like to learn, this gives a chance for their students to practise before our schools talk on Friday. Normally we would rehearse with a lot more finesse but we are talking Friday and wanted to give Burham a chance to practise before we talk. It was filmed by Nathalie and Terrina from Room Eight and filmed in Room One on Wednesday 3rd November 2010.

Melville Intermediate - Inter Intermediate Softball Slideshow

Melville Intermediate - Inter Intermediate Softball

Melville Intermediate competed in the Waikato Inter-Intermediate Softball Competition at Resthills Park, Melville. The Girls played Te Awamutu Intermediate first being defeated 6-10, they then defeated Matamata Intermediate 11-6, before in their best game of the tournament defeating Peachgrove Intermediate (the eventual champions) 5-3. A final game against Maeroa Intermediate
would have meant Melville would have made the Semi-Finals.
Unfortunately it was not to be with Maeroa winning 3-5.

The Melville Intermediate Boys team had managed to place 2nd in 2009 and were keen to take a further step forward. They started the competition in dominating fashion defeating Matamata Intermediate 14-4. They then defeated Te Awamutu Intermediate 13-4. The followed this up by defeating Maeroa Intermediate 5-2. Their final pool game was a defeat of Berkley Intermediate 12-1. Their final pool game was against last years finalists, Peachgrove Intermediate this game was tied at 4-4 going into the final innings when Peachgrove won 6-4.
The 2010 Boys Final was a rematch of 2009 and also the final pool game as our Boys played Peachgrove Intermediate yet again. It was a very close affair, as it was only in the final innings that Peachgrove were able to break away and win the competition.

Melville Intermediates School team really put their best effort into the tournament today and had a wonderful time. Their behaviour was exemplary and the boys can be proud of finishing 2nd and the Girls making 3rd place.

We'd also like to extend our warmest congratulations to Peachgrove Intermediate who won both the Boys and the Girls competition for 2010.

Melville Intermediate - Room Eight Preview

As you know in Room Eight we are currently in temporary accommodation, looking to have a new super improved Room Eight finished sometime before the end of the year. We can't obviously have people inside a building site but we were able to have Shania under the supervision of Mr Webb make a quick walk through of the new Room Eight (and Room Seven) today using the Bloggie. It gives you an idea of the wonderful space being constructed which we can't wait to get into! Stay tuned for further building updates!
