Melville Intermediate - Prep Day 2009

Melville Intermediate - Y8 Prep

Yesterday the Y8 students had their 'Prep' market day. There were 50 stalls from the students selling all variety of products - we've taken a huge amount of footage that will be going online later today. Students were raising the money for the Y8 trip at the end of the year. The Y7 students spent over $800 on products for the very successful day.

This is Scott's recount on the day:
'Today was prep, prep is a day for the Y8's to sell stuff and make a lot of money for the school. There was a lot of stuff that you could buy. The thing is that I brought was sherbert - it was pretty nice but not nice enough! The MISM's were a good idea - what they were is fake money. There were 50 stores in the school. Some were fizzy drinks and some were games and lollies - everyone was really excited. I was to, also my friends. There was a really hard one, you had to throw a water balloon into a basketball hoop. Also there was a game, there was a boy that got water balloons thrown at him. One person who was throwing the ballons at the boy was a teacher! Mr Day!'

Melville Intermediate - School Singing Group

This is a medley of Beach Boys Songs performed by the Melville Intermediate School singing group. The students were at the local Methodist Church where they took time out from their regular classroom program to entertain some of the locals. Filmed on Monday 10th August by Mr Bell our Schools music teacher!

This report about the visit was written by Ilene and Ane.
"On the 10th August Melville Intermediate School singing went to the Methodist Church. Our numbers were really low but we had a lot of faith in ourselves. It all started when we first hopped on the bus. Minutes later we were in the Church waiting to sing to the auidence. We sang a range of songs from country to pop such as 'Lean on Me', 'Country Roads' and 'Amazing Grace'. In the end the Probus Senior Club was really impressed with our school group. Finally it was over and we felt proud of ourselves."

Melville Intermediate - Prep Preview

This is Vitolina's explanation of what Prep is:
'Prep is Market day for Y8 students. It is a competition to see which group wins. What we mean is that teh Year 7's pay real money to buy MISM's and they can spend it on whatever they like and the group that gets the most MISM's wins. (MISM is Melville Intermediate School Money).

There is going to be things infront of every classroom. There is going to be around 48 stalls all over the school selling yum stuff like candy floss, fizzy drinks, food, lollies, slushies. You pay to go and play and take part in some activities. Like you can play a Playstation 2 game and all sorts of other stuff.

For $1 you can buy 4 MISMs. The market day is on Wednesday 26th of August at Melville Intermediate Schol and I can't wait.

Melville Intermediate - Inter-Intermediate Cross Country.

Last week Melville Intermediate's Cross Country team competed at Porrit Stadium in the Waikato Inter-Intermediate Cross Country Competition. It was a challenging day for our students highlighted by Blair's 6th place finish and Kaleb from Room 8 making 33rd. It was a wonderful day for the students and Kaleb wrote this report:

The cross country was held at Porrit Stadium on the 21st of August 21, 2009. There was lots of different schools such as Te Awamutu Intermediate , Cambridge Intermediate , Berkley, Peachgrove Intermediate, Fairfield Intermediate and a lot more of them .

I think that it was great work for Melville. We did great work climbing those hills and going through those giant lakes that were up to my knees. It was great fun. I’m really proud of myself and others. I think that Blair did the best because he never gave up even though he had a very sore hamstring he came 6th. I came 33rd it was a great day for us all. It was hard work so it was great fun and we all had a good time.

Melville Intermediate - Powder Toy

Students in Room 8 have had a new program that's had them very excited in the past few days. It has been so exciting that Kalem has produced a report about it.

'It's a really cool game and its not a virus. We're going to show you what it looks like by putting a screen shot up. You can go to google and google "powder toy". You need to click on the first listed powder toy and you need to download it.

I enjoy it because its really fun. You use metal and then draw an object. You then put things into it like gunpowder in the middle, then mix it with fire and lava! You can then watch it blow up.'

Powder Toy can be downloaded from here.

Melville Intermediate - Technology Challenge

Visit www.moblyng.com to make your own!

This montage of photographs is from Friday's technology Challenge. The task was simple - use 40 straws to construct a tower, on top of that tower place a plate, flat side up, and then on top of the plate place a round gumball that had to remain stationary. Highest tower where the gumball didn't fall off would win! There were some great ideas put forward (including Janice's group who suspended their gumball in straw but still had it touching the plate but once the judging had been completed team Molinda were declared the winners with a tower that stood 54cm high! Well done team!

Melville Intermediate - The Digital Online Process

This slide of photo's shows the display at the front of the classroom which is the digital process - students refer to this before they create something for the blog. We are particularly careful to pay attention to the audience and the reviewing of work after it is published. The back wall has a world map that contains a badge or flag for every different country that has visited our class page - its nearly at 60! We've also stickered every location where we've had visits in line with what's been happening on our Clustermap - the more visits the bigger the sticker.

Melville Intermediate - Cross Country Recount

On Wednesday 5th August 2009 we went from our class to do the Cross Country. The Year 7 Girls were going first and everyone thought that India would win the race. The track was to go around the field then go to the High School then you go past the turf and then you go onto the Carter field and you will come around to the playground and then do it all again. At the start India was coming first but on the second lap Annalise was coming first by around 100 meters and she couldn't be caught. Then it was the Y7 Boys turn. I was a little bit scared and I thought that I was going to come about 20th. We did some warm up first and then Mr Day said ready steady go! and I was running my fastest. I was happy because I was coming third at the start but then it died down a bit on the Carter Field so I was coming seventh but when I saw Scott behind me I picked the pace up, so did Scott. Behind him was a big pack. Scott had ended up passing me so I had come 8th, so I was very proud of myself. Raukawa, Room 8, Melville Intermediate School.

Melville Intermediate - Hip Hop Rerhearsals 2

Our Hip Hop group are at Te Aroha on Friday for a special performance. This will be the first time that they have performed after all their practice and they are excited and nervous at the thought of performing infront of a crowd. While we have students who are in the group we will also have a film crew there to record the groups show, and also the CPA who are performing as well!

This piece of work was created by students from another school. We're using it as an example to students of how they can display work that is relevant. If you are in Room 8 and you watch this video carefully you will be able to see some 'famous faces' in the piece of work... keep your eyes peeled...

Melville Intermediate - Melville High School Kapahaka

This Friday we had what was one of the highlights of the year. Melville High Schools Kapahaka group, to celebrate winning their regional High School Competition performed at Melville Intermediate School on Friday 31st of July. This show was simply amazing and as a teacher watching it, I was thrilled for the students from our school and the students from the High School. There were so many highlights one of which was when the CPA group were invited on stage to perform an action song near the end. This is some of the highlights from the show.

Destyn from Room 8 wrote about his experience as being a member of this group...
To be in Kapa Haka is so hard but cool too. I think that we are the bomb. We are like a family. We train three times a week. We learn a tune, and the actions to make it awesome fun. For the Kapahaka I have hada great time. My Aunty likes me to be in it and Kapahaka is so really good and it gets everybody moving. If you want to know anymore about Kapahaka just ask Destyn!

The regional competition Mana Ariki, we came first. It was mean as and also very cool. The points that we tried to get were 200, but the points we actually got were 199. It was cool that we came first in the competition because I was sitting down, the Kapahaka heard that we won and we were so happy.
