Today in Te Awamutu Melville Intermediate School competed in the 2013 Waikato Inter Intermediate Basketball competition. The Melville Intermediate Girls team started off the day with a tight game against Morrinsville Intermediate. Morrinsville were leading for most of the game before Melville were able to take the lead with two minutes remaining a register a win 12-8. Melvilles next game was against Berkly School, who blew Melville off the park. Berkley dominated the game winning 6-22. Melville then needed to defeat Matamata Intermediate to qualify for the semi-finals. Another tight game saw Melville edge Matamata 10-8, Melville duly qualfiying for the semi=finals.
In semi-finals Melville had to take on the unbeaten Cambridge Middle School. Melville Girls put on a huge display both offensivly and defensivly. Melville took an early lead which stretched out to six points at one stage, although Cambridge were always in touch. Cambridge closed the gap in end but by this stage it was too late Melville winning 15-12. In the other semi-final Berkley were eliminated by Te Awamutu Intermediate.
The 2013 finals beckoned and up against Melville were Te Awamutu Intermediate. It was another exciting encounter with Melville establishing an early lead before a Te Awamutu fightback. Te Awamutu finally took the lead with three and half minutes remaining however Melville struck back and scored an impressive 20-17 win. This was Melville Intermediates first Inter Intermediate competition win in 2013 and they were very happy to successfully defended the Waikato Schools title which we won last year.

Melville Intermediate - NZAIMS Games Review
Melville Intermediate Schools Girls Basketball team returned from the NZAIMS Games in Tauranga on Friday afternoon. The team competed with teams from throughout the country during the week.
The first up game against Aquinas College from Tauranga resulted in a narrow 27-28 loss for Melville. Following this Melville were able to defeat Dio School from Auckland 40-10 and Kristen School from Auckland 35-28. Day two saw three crucial games. In the first Melville were able to come up with a win against St Cuthberts College 35-4.
The secong game was against unbeaten and tournament hosts Tauranga Intermediate School. Tauranga had been in dominating form, undefeated after four games, although Melville Intermediate had managed to defeat Tauranga at the quarter final stage in both 2011 and 2012. This year it was not to be, an awesome defensive display from Tauranga combined with some decisive counter attacking saw them take a commanding 2-24 half time lead. Althogh Melville Intermediate were able to peg Tauranga back in the second half the gap proved too much for Melville to bridge, Tauranga winning 38 to 19.
The final Tuesday game, Melvilles sixth in two days saw us take on Northcross Intermediate who had a single defeat. Melville played their game of the tournament defeating Northcross 34-19. That left a final pool game, against Kura o Te Koutu from Rotorua. Melville came up against the eventual New Zealand and NZAIMS Champions who were in dominate form and who beat Melville 12-60.
This left Melville having a play off game in the tournament for 7th and 8th place against The Knox School from Melbourne. Melville were hoping to finish with a win, however again it was not to be and in another very close game Melville were defeated 23-28, finishing 8th (out of 17 teams) for the 2013 nationals.
At the finals prizegiving Chilo Heurea from Melville Intermediate was named in the 2013 NZAIMS Tournament team in recognition of her outstanding play and leadership. This meant she was recognised as one of the top twelve players in New Zealand for her age.
Our warmes congratulations to our friends at Koromatua School from Hamilton who were runners up oin the Boys and Girls Competition. We would also like to acknowledge Kura O Te Koutu who were worthy champions, the first school to achieve this honour twice.

Melville Intermediate Vs. Murrays Bay Intermediate
Finals night last night from the Winter Olympics 2013 competition saw the Melville Intermediate School teams contesting both the Girls and Boys Basketball finals. Melville Intermediates Girls took on Murrays Bay in an incredibly close game - a four point half time lead to Murrays Bay saw a single point seperating both teams at full time. Great preparation for the Melville Intermediate School team which is competing at the NZAIMS Games in Tauranga later this term.

Melville Intermediate Vs. Peachgrove Intermediate
On Tuesday 14th May Melville Intermediate Girls Basketball team went to play at the YMCA in the Hamilton Tuesday night competition. The team was scheduled to play against a Peachgrove Intermediate Girls team but discovered that we were playing their Boys 'B' team instead. A close first quarter saw the score 8-8, Peachgrove took a lead into half time of four points, before the third quarter ended up tied again, this time at 22 all. In the final quarter Melville Intermediate pulled away able to defeat Peachgrove Intermediate 30-24. We had a couple of players sick, Leseili had a hurt hand so she could only play one handed! These highlights were filmed by Hayley Jade. Melville Intermediate are in thier red and green top while Peachgrove are wearing the Maroon with gold

Melville Intermediate Vs. John Paul College
On Friday 15th June Melville Intermediate Schools Girls Basketball team travelled to Rotorua for the Kaitoa Middle School Invitational Basketball Tournament. It was a fantastic opportunity for our girls to play against other teams, some of whom will be featuring (including ourselves) at the NZAIMS tournament. Following a single point loss to hosts Kaitoa Middle School first, Melville then defeated two local Rotorua schools Kura te Koutu and Mokoia School. Due to the nature of the draw there was a straight final (congratulations to Kaitoa Middle School who defeated Matamata Intermediate 34-14) and that meat Melville were playing off for 3rd/4th against John Paul College. Melville are in their traditional red/green tops, JPC are in black, white and red.

Melville Intermediate - AIMS Games Preparation
In September this year the NZAIMS (New Zealand Association of Intermediates and Middle School) games will take place in Tauranga. This year there are over 150 schools competing in 15 different events, with over 5500 Y7 and Y8 students competing. Melville Intermediate will be there to contest the Girls Basketball title for the fourth year in a row, this year against a record 18 other schools. The tournament is the show piece for Intermediate Age Sport in New Zealand, and there are schools fom Australia competing for the first time. Melville Intermediate are currently preparing by playing on Tuesday nights in a local basketball league. However we're preparing for the competition by playing against club sides and boys teams. Following wins against Te Awamutu Intermediate and St Pius School our girls looked to make it three in a row against the Flyers 'Heat' Basketball team this past Tuesday, 29th May from The YMCA on Pembroke Street. The video was filmed from the subs bench during the game!

Melville Intermediate - Term One BBall Finals
On Tuesday 2nd April 2012 Melville Intermediate Girls Basketball held their final game of Term One, the pool final against a club team, the X Factor. They'd already met before this term and the X Factor were the only team Melville hadn't defeated (with a 33-33 draw in round one). This game couldn't have been closer with the lead repeatedly changing hands during the course of the game, at one point in the third quarter Melville were down by four, however some excellent defence in combination with some assured attack saw the Melville Intermediate Girls win the final in the end 29-25. Great preparation as the team prepares to compete in the 2012 NZAIMS Tournament taking place in September in Tauranga. You can read full details of this tournament, which is New Zealand's largest here.

Melville Intermediate - AIMS Games Website Online
The 2012 AIMS (Association Intermediate and Middle Schools) website is now fully up and running. This has all the details of the upcoming AIMS Tournament in September. Melville Intermediate is going for the fourth straight year in Girls Basketball at the moment, but maybe in a couple of area's as well. Melville Intermediate's Girls team have nearly finished their term one preparation, with a Pool Semi-Final on Tuesday against Maeroa Intermediate School. The team consisted mainly of Boys (Melville Intermediate are of course all Girls) and the game was close at the start but Melville Intermediate were able to win the game 55-6. This puts our Girls into the Pool Final next week against 'X Factor 78'.

Melville Intermediate - Girls Basketball 2012
Our Girls Basketball team on Tuesday faced the only team this year to force a draw against them, in the rematch Melville were keen to continuing making progress as part of our continued preparation to the 2012 AIMS Games in Tauranga. The first game against local club side X Factor had ended 33-33 with them scoring an unbelievable last basket to tie the match, this time Melville were intent on showing some more strength in defence. Melville are in the Green and Red and the X Factor in the blue. Filmed on Tuesday 20th March 2012.

Melville Intermediate - Vs. Maeroa Intermediate
On Tuesday 7th March 2012 our Girls Basketball team played their fourth 2012 game. We'd done really well so far, defeating two club teams and having a draw with a third. We were a bit nervous playing Maeroa Intermediate when we turned up because they had all Boys in their team (except for one player), but Melville (in the Red and Green) played really well defensively restricting Maeroa (in the blue) to three points by half time (after twenty minutes of game time) and only two more points in the whole rest of the game (40 minutes). At the same time Melville were able to score 49, meaning that we kept our unbeaten run going and are now 3-1-0. For the season. This Tuesday we have a game against KBC Korus'.

Melville Intermediate - Basketball Champions Tribute
Over the last few days we've been busy in the background preparing some releases for our students, one is the talent quest DVD, the second is a DVD celebrating our Melville Intermediate Girls Basketball team winning the Girls title at the Nationals, Mr Webb has been mucking around with Photostory to compile some of the photo's taken of the team for the end of the DVD. This is what he came up with - to once again acknowledge the team and the wonderful spirit and team work that they showed from the event. Credit for this idea needs to go to the Tamaki College site where I saw it!

Melville Intermediate - Hastings Vs. Melville AIMS Final
This video is some of the highlights of the 2009 AIMS Basketball Games Girls Final between Hastings Intermediate School and Melville Intermediate School. Hastings were the defending National Champions, undeafeated all week and a team that had racked up some dominating scores leading to the final. Melville were entering the nationals for the first time in Basketball, and likewise went through Pool Play and the Semi-Finals with a run of victories. The two best teams were in the finals, as it should be... the first quarter was tied at 10-10, in the second Melville applied the pressure and by half time had a 30 point lead! The Final Score being 67-33 to Melville who took their first AIMS National title. Filmed at Tauranga's Mt Manganui Action Center by Mr Webb on Thursday 6th September 2009.
