Melville Intermediate - Inside the School Canteen

This term, which starts tomorrow, we're putting together our Canteen/Tuck Shop material that we collated last term from around New Zealand and the world.  The aim of the student councillors who were working on it was to improve the options of students at Melville Intermediate School.  For our inspiration we used the classrooms that we are linked with, and Mr Webb used our PLN.  What we discovered was that not everyone knew what a 'Canteen' was - in the USA its a water bottle!  However we also filmed our own Tuck Shop/Canteen, which is available for our students to buy items for their lunch... and we sent Elizabeth, Jamie and Kristal to film inside.  Filmed at Melville Intermediate School at the end of term one.  Term two starts tomorrow.

These video illustrate our school Canteen (Tuck Shop, Cafe) in action.  Its part of our series of work on lunches and the choices available.  This video shows Elizabeth and Jamie from Room Five, two of the volunteer students at Melville Intermediate School who run the school Canteen at lunchtime under the supervision of the staff.

In class Mr. Webb told us we needed to brainstorm video ideas. In 2 minutes I had already thought of an idea and ahd finished up making a mini storyboard for it. A couple days later, my group had done interviews for the video and a little bit of the tour for the canteen. We have also made a video showing Jamie and I serving people in the canteen. :) please enjoy both of them. By the way, once we have finished the whole video we will puut it up on the blog so you can see it all together as one. :)

The second video is of students who serve in the Canteen talking about the experience and what they have done while serving their.

Melville Intermediate - Canteen Tour 2012

We've had a lot of questions about our School Canteen (aka Tuck Shop) and what better way to explain it than to have the two students from Room Five who run the shop once a fortnight to give you a behind the scenes guided tour!  Filmed by Kylie on Friday 23rd March 2012 at Melville Intermediate.

Melville Intermediate - Mr Cooke Interview.

This video was created by Kayla and Icis from Room Five and features an interview with Mr Cooke, the Melville Intermediate School Principal about of School Canteen (Tuck Shop) what money is raised by selling food to the students and what that money is used for.  This is the students first video for 2012 and we will be watching it and assessing it in class tomorrow.  Filmed by Icis on Friday 17th February 2012.

Mevlille Intermediate - Tuck Shop Prices 2009

I'm always interested from a teacher perspective of comparisons between New Zealand and the way we do things at our school and others internationally and nationally. One of the areas that always interests the students is the food availability at schools!

The list on the left is our Tuck Shop/Canteen Price list for 2009. Students can order from the list in the mornings, and also have an option of a menu to choose from at lunchtime. Prices are in New Zealand dollars, pardon me for my bad stab at the exchange rate but $1NZ is about US$0.60 at the moment. I'll have to check!

We had a major health decision by the former government last year restricted sales of certain items during the week which is why pies are available only on certain days, although the new government has repealed this. Most schools have not gone back to their previous menu's.

Finally although we do have a Tuck Shop/Canteen we have this as an area to sell the food only, its not a specific seated area for students to eat. I'll take some pictures of it/assign a project about it next term.
