New presenters!  Last year it was the biggest undertaking of the whole year from our class and we said at the end of it "never again" well never has arrived! Melville Intermediate - ANZAC Day 2012

We've been looking at ANZAC day which is a public holiday for the entire country on Wednesday 25th April 2012.   As part of that we had some students voluntarily bring in items from home on Tuesday.  Mr Webb was very pleasantly surprised when Bianca brought in a very, very special family treasure to show everyone - some medals that were awarded to her Poppa for World War Two.   These were very well looked after while they were at school, so special they had to be left in the safe, as they had a very special role on ANZAC Day they were due to be worn at the ANZAC day service at Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Melville Intermediate - Term One BBall Finals

On Tuesday 2nd April 2012 Melville Intermediate Girls Basketball held their final game of Term One, the pool final against a club team, the X Factor.  They'd already met before this term and the X Factor were the only team Melville hadn't defeated (with a 33-33 draw in round one).   This game couldn't have been closer with the lead repeatedly changing hands during the course of the game, at one point in the third quarter Melville were down by four, however some excellent defence in combination with some assured attack saw the Melville Intermediate Girls win the final in the end 29-25.   Great preparation as the team prepares to compete in the 2012 NZAIMS Tournament taking place in September in Tauranga.  You can read full details of this tournament, which is New Zealand's largest here.

Melville Intermediate - Leana and Tara: Ave Maria

This term Melville Intermediate was invited to be part of a new student leadership scheme called Kia Tu.   Initially forty student leaders were selected to undertake a training programme with a Leadership Facilitator.  From this group a smaller team of student leaders were selected to represent Melville Intermediate on an organisation committee to organise and run a Waikato Intermediate Students Talent Quest.  Parallel to this, a school wide Talent Quest was held to select seven student groups or individuals to go through to a series of regional heats, semi-finals and ultimately a final.  Melville Intermediate were fortunate to be one of two schools who had two sets of contestants selected for the final, Kyla (Room Twelve) and Carter (Room One).  This is footage of Leana and Tara singing in the Semi-Final with their version of the 'Ave Maria'.  Filmed on Friday 30th March 2012 at Berkley Middle School by Veronica from Room Five.

Melville Intermediate - Inter Intermediate Art Day

On Friday 30th March 2012 I went to Maeroa Intermediate for the Inter Intermediate Art Day.  The first activity I did was photographic Art.  What we had to do sounds easy but was actually quite hard.  We had to pose in odd positions while touching each other, and then someone else had to take the picture in an odd angle.  I took heaps of pictures and it was photographically fun.  Next we did environmental work.  We had to get a paper plate and make a symmetrical circle with a big flower/leaf in the middle.  When the teacher told us the instructions I smiled knowing I had a really cool idea in my head.   I immediately jumped up and ran to my bag to get out my ice cream container filled of environmental stuff to make my idea come to life! When I finished I looked down and smiled a big smile.  For in my mind I had made a masterpiece.  I hadn't actually finished that class yet because we had to get into three groups of four and make an even bigger circle.  The theme for our circle was 'Summer' so our group made our circle out of different shades of green and slight bits of colour to finish the touches to our Summer wonderland.  The third and final class was probably the coolest class that I had done all day because the teacher was called Runu and I knew Runu from Primary School, but it wasn't just that, that made the lesson fun.  It was also that we got to do ANY design we wanted to do.  I started to get a few ideas in my head and those few ideas turned into something really cool.  What I did first was normal because all I was doing was just drawing my designs on to my flag so then if I made a mistake I could easily fix it up.  After I had finished my pencil work I put my paint on top of the pencil then I dried it.   By then it was already 2:15pm and all we had to do was to crush the Environmental Art because there was no way it could get carried out of the Maeroa Intermediate Gym.  So as soon as they said that they were going to destroy it,  I immediately jumped up and grabbed my work because I didn't really want my work crushed.   After we had watched it being crushed we packed up our stuff and came back to school.   It was a really fun day and I was so glad that I was a part of it.  Report by Elizabeth, Room Five.

Melville Intermediate - A Gift From Denmark

Today in class we had a special, special occasion.  We knew that a parcel was on its way from the staff and students at Vonsild School in Denmark.  We were hoping that this would arrive before the start of the school holidays on Thursday, and today it arrived! You can read about the original post and see the parcel in Denmark before it leaves by clicking on the link here.  The photo's in this sideshow were taken as we examined the parcel and passed it around the students before opening it and seeing what was inside! It's inspired us with our learning because we've been learning about Denmark, and their national sport which is Handball (which is completely different from what we in New Zealand think about 'Handball').  We're going to post again about this before the end of term but wanted to thank again our friends from Denmark for the start of such a wonderful learning experience.

Melville Intermediate - Levi's Drumming Recount

For the past few weeks I have been taking time out of school to play Drums. The first day I was so excited to see who my teacher was. His name is Adam. The first thing we did was name the Drums and then hit them. The names of the drums are the bass drum, the snare drum, the little tom,the big tom,the floor tom,the crash cymbal and the ride cymbal. For the rest of the lesson Adam taught me a really cool beat. On the second week we read music. My teacher showed me how to read percussion music, the 3rd week I read music more and got a book and a DVD. In the book there are lessons, out of 12 I am up to lesson 5. Next week I am going to see what I am doing.

Melville Intermediate - Tutoring in Maori Language

As we're approaching Maori Language Week again, and now fully operational in the classroom we're again offering tutoring through Skype for students in Maori Language.  We've done this for several years now, with our Mihi work and our general activities, and its proved very popular! We have a team of students and connections with other classrooms that are available at different times to suit, if you are interested please let us know.  To remind some of you about our past experience have a look at this selection of video work.
Here's Hayze and Mackenzie two of our Tutors from 2011 explaining what a Mihi is and giving examples:
But its not only students in New Zealand that we've been teaching Maori Language to. Last year we had interaction with students from Lyudmila's Classroom in Kransnoyarskiykray Kray, Siberia, Russia. There students learnt to introduce themselves in Maori and say the days of the week!
We've also worked with numerous schools throughout New Zealand including Waiuku Primary School in 2011. This video shows an example of some of our Tutors at work with a classroom teaching their students Maori Language.
