Melville Intermediate - Inter Intermediate Basketball 2012

Today Melville Intermediate competed in the Waikato Inter Intermediate Basketball Competition for 2012 held at the Te Awamutu Events Centre.  The Melville Boys found the going a little tough, losing to Te Awamutu Intermediate first up 15-24, before drawing with Cambridge 8-8.  They then lost to Tokoroa Intermediate 2-12 before finishing up against semi-finalists Peachgrove Intermediate School and beating them 14-10.   The Boys finished 5th overall.

The Girls were unbeaten for the tournament.  They defeated Cambridge Middle School in the first game 12-6, before defeating defending champions Peachgrove Intermediate School 14-12.  They then took on Te Awamutu Intermediate and defeated them 8-4.  This put Melville into the Semi-Final against Berkley Middle School.  Melville defeated them 18-2 to book a place in the final against Matamata Intermediate.  Matamata went into the final with some amazing stats- they had not conceded a point in any game, and the final was a closely fought affair.  It was 8-4 to Melville at half time and in the second half Melville were able to claim the slenderest of wins 14-12.  This makes Melville the 2012 Waikato Champions and is a fantastic build up to the NZAIMS Tournament which starts this Sunday!

Melville Intermediate - Basketball Vs. Fairfield Int.

On Tuesday our Girls Basketball team travelled to Fairfield Intermediate School in Hamilton for our NZAIMS Tournament team to play against the Fairfield Intermediate Boys team. The NZAIMS tournament is just thirty days away and is taking place in Tauranga. This year there are over 160 schools and 5800 students competing in the different sports. Melville Intermediate are contesting the Gymsport Hip Hop and Girls Basketball competitions.  Our girls teams in the past three years have finished 1st (2009), 4th (2010) and 3rd (2011) in New Zealand.  The current team has been playing together for nearly a year and a half, although on Tuesdays when we have the Waikato Basketball competition we have some players in their club teams.   The Girls have been looking for warm up games prior to the competition and were very excited to travel to Fairfield Intermediate.  Although they played a Boys team that had rep players in it, the Melville Intermediate Girls led by eight points at half time and we able to stretch that lead further in the second half and defeated Fairfield 44-31.  Tia from Room Eighteen top scored 16 points in the game.  Sam from Room Five was present and filmed some high lights.

Melville Intermediate Vs. John Paul College

On Friday 15th June Melville Intermediate Schools Girls Basketball team travelled to Rotorua for the Kaitoa Middle School Invitational Basketball Tournament.  It was a fantastic opportunity for our girls to play against other teams, some of whom will be featuring (including ourselves) at the NZAIMS tournament.  Following a single point loss to hosts Kaitoa Middle School first, Melville then defeated two local Rotorua schools Kura te Koutu and Mokoia School.  Due to the nature of the draw there was a straight final (congratulations to Kaitoa Middle School who defeated Matamata Intermediate 34-14) and that meat Melville were playing off for 3rd/4th against John Paul College.  Melville are in their traditional red/green tops, JPC are in black, white and red.

Melville Intermediate - Vs. Mokoia School

On Friday 15th June the Melville Intermediate School Girls Basketball Team travelled to Rotorua to compete in the Kaitoa Middle School Invitational Basketball Tournament.  The day started with Melville playing the hosts (and eventual tournament winners Kaitoa Middle School) and losing 23-24.  They picked themselves up to play and defeat Te Kura o te Koutu 27-20.  The final pool game of the tournament was against Mokoia School from Rotorua, and this video is highlights from that game.  Melville are in their traditional red/green, Mokoia are in the red.  Filmed by the sub bench at the Rotorua Events Centre on June 15th 2012.
