Melville Intermediate - School Science Experiments

As culmination of the elective options for block three of term two, which finished on the second to last day of school Mrs Wydham-Smith's Science Experiment Classroom were able to conduct this exciting experiment. Despite doubts about whether it would be successful or not just have a look at what the class was able to produce!

Melville Intermediate - Paper Hot Air Balloons

This report was written for this blog by Liam and Grace from Room Seven. It describes the steps that they went through to create Tissue Paper Hot Air Balloons and then launch them at school last week.

We made Hot Air Balloons using tissue paper and PVA glue. Step One - cut four large sheets of tissue paper out. Step Two - Cut the corners off. Step Three - Glue the sides together, but careful not to glue the sides together where you cut the corners. Step Four - make sure their are no holes. Step Five - Cut some cardboard into the shape of a square, the size of the hole at the bottom of the hot air balloon. Step Six - Cut out the inside of the cardboard square so there's only 3cm of a border. Step Seven - Glue the border/cardboard square to the bottom of the hot air balloon. Step Eight - Stick another piece of No 8 wire through the side of the cardboard to make a cross/plus sign. Step nine take it out on a cold early morning with no wind or breeze that is a location suitable for launching a balloon. You must have a adult or teacher present. Step Ten: get some Methylated Spirits and Cotton Balls and some more wire. Put some methylated spirits on the wire. Step Eleven - hold the Hot Air Balloon at the top and light the cotton balls. Hold it until you can feel the heat from the inside of the Balloon lift it up then the wind should catch it and it should launch! Here's a video of our classes attempt to lauch them!

(Note, no students were harmed in the launching of these Balloons and it was done under close teacher supervision).

Melville Intermediate - Mould Experiment 3

These photographs were taken on the last day of term and are a continuation of our 'Great Mould Experiment Series'. Those of you following our blog since the start of the year will know that we 'bagged up' a series of sandwiches on February 25th and have left them in the classroom since then. Its been interesting to note by Keegan and Leigh that the Sandwiches with the Marmite have moulded the least where as the one that's been affected the most is the bread that was left without a filling. The experiment we're hoping to maintain until the end of the School Year in December (pong permitting) or if there are developments in the future!

Melville Intermediate- Science Experiment - 5 Months!

Hello my name is Leigh. Five months ago we made some sandwiches in our classroom on the 25th of February. We put them in plastic bags and left them to mould. We did this to see which ones would mould first. There were five bags. We named the bags with the ingredients (Marmite, Jam, Margarine, Bread) and the names of who made them. We are still continuing with the experiment.

Melville Intermediate - Mould Experiment 2

This short video is an update from our current Mould Experiment Scientists Leigh and Keegan from Room 8. As regular followers of this site will be aware on February of this year the students from this class created a series of sandwhiches with various ingredients and then sealed them in plastic bags. That was two monts and four days ago. Today the scientists update you on the progress. They are joined for this by Tim from Room 17 who happened to be in the room when we filmed the presentation.

Melville Intermediate - Rockets

This Thursday during our Y7 Option Classes (in addition to Technology students of Melville Intermediate have an 'Option' Class of a further 3 hours of specialist teaching one of the classes has been construction Rockets - Thursday is launch day, and they are expected to go 100 feet (that's an American reference for our friends) in the air! Of course we'll be there with Camera and Photographs to document! Stay tuned!

Melville Intermediate - Science Experiment

Our fantastic Science Experiment in Room 8 continues with a Mould Update. It's now been two full weeks since we bagged our sandwiches and left them to 'develop'. The mould growth that's most evident is on the 'control' bread, without filling and on the bread where we just put margarine, although were hoping this might change as it ages. We're hoping to complete the experiment in December! Keegan was able to count 6 different moulds on the bread at the 14 day mark!

Melville Intermediate - Mould Experiment

Today Keegan and Leigh started their mould experiments. We are researching the growth of mould on food. To that end we prepared sandwiches in the classroom. The following report is written by Keegan about the experiment.

Today on February 26th Me and Leigh, Scott, Rachana, Raukawa, Kalib G, Arahia and Dylan made sandwiches. Leigh and Keegan took the photo's. The ingredients that we used are jam, marmite, peanut butter, margarine and tomato sauce.

We have made predictions about what will happen, what will go mouldy first. We are leaving them in a special place for the rest of the year or until we can't stand the smell anymore. We will keep everyone as the mould develops with regular updates on this blog.
