Melville Intermediate - Cultural Dances from CPA

One of groups assoicated with students from Melville Intermediate School is our CPA (Cultural Performing Arts Group).  The group consists of Melville Intermediate School students who are tutored in different cultures who perform during the year and visit other schools.   In 2013 our CPA had an afternoon performance on 27th November 2013 at Melville Intermediate School for the local community.  These highlights from the show were filmed by Nichola from Room Five and edited and processed by Levi and Nathan H.

The Tahitian section was taught by O'Shaan Fletcher which was really fun and it was taught in term 3. The first item was called Fakateretere and the second item was called Te Tamamaohi. It is a dance that expresses your feelings. The Tahitian section is really fun because you will experience the exciting parts of dancing. Written by Hossana.

The Hawaiian section was taught by Karlene Guzzo, it was fun because you get to learn the different types of implements that Hawaiian has and how fun it is to play. the Hawaiian items that we performed were pearly shells, lilo stitch and implements. in the Hawaiian section you will experience how fun it is just like Tahitian.  Written by Hossana from Room Two.

Melvlle Intermediate - CPA at Te Pahu Primary

Our hands were sweating, our teeth were chattering, it was almost time to perform to Te Pahu Primary School. We were all standing on the stage in our Maori costumes, waiting to unleash our pukana. Simon bursted out the command that started our entire performance, and that's when it all begun!

We all went from nervous to excited. From then on, we were all strong in our performance. When we finished our Maori section, we rushed off stage to zoom into our Samoan costumes. The girls performed their Siva and then the boys came on and we all performed the sasa. We finished our Samoan section, and had to once again zoom into our Hawaiian Costumes. During our short changing times, our Hawaiian teacher, performed a few dances of her own. It was time to go on stage again. Our first dance of the section, was a big hit, but the second was even bigger! We exited the stage with a round of applause from Te Pahu primary.

Melville Intermediate - Hawaiian CPA Dance

This footage is from the Schools Cultural Performing Arts Group. This group is made up of a variety of students who learn cultural dance and performance in Samoan, Maori, Cook Island and Hawaiian throughout the year. The group performed during 2010 at a variety of locations and events starting with the Founders Theatre in Hamilton for a New Zealand swearing in ceremony and finishing in the last week in December with a special performance for Hayze's Nana's 70th birthday party. This is part of that performance being the Hawaiian section of the show.
