Melville Intermediate - Maeroa Intermediate Girls Touch

The final game for Melville Intermediate Girls Touch team for 2011 came in the last pool game against our friends at Maeroa Intermediate, they scored so quick, from the first set of six, that we didn't have the cameras rolling, and scored a second try not long after. However in an incredibly first half Kaea from Melville Intermediate, Room 18 managed to score a brace herself to bring the match to 2-2. Neither side was able to score in the second half meaning a draw was the end result and a positive way for both teams to end the tournament. This video was filmed on the 24th March at Swarbrick Park, Hamilton by Lana and Shania from Room Eight.

Melville Intermediate - Police Blue Light Challenge 2011

On Monday 21st of March a group of 8 students (four Girls and four Boys) went to Ashurst Park for a Police Fitness Test called Bluelight.

Once we got there we felt pretty nervous and couldn't wait for it to start. We got split up into two teams, team red and team green. I was in team green with Raearna, Jackson and Hone. In team red was Annika, Shyniah, Keegan and Reece. First event we did was the car push. The time to beat was 27.6 seconds to push the police car ten meters and put the seat belts on in the car. We tried our best but we got 32.6 seconds. We could have got out in less time but it was the silly seat belt. Our second activity was the obstacle course. It was so hard we had to jump a six foot wall, jump through a window, walk on a beam, run 200m and so much more. Our best time was 2:51 minutes and we almost beat the best time which was 2:40 minutes. Last of all we had our swimming race. We had to do four laps of 50 meters with a ball. We did really well to get third. Overall it was a good day, we all had fun and we finished 5th out of 15 schools.

Melville Intermediate - Handball in New Zealand

NZ Handball Demo for Denmark from myles webb on Vimeo.

One of the sites that we've really enjoyed visiting recently has been Vonslid School Blog in Denmark, it caused us to research Denmark because we discovered that we didn't know very much about it as a country. One of our students, Lana created a slideshow about the comparison between Denmark and New Zealand. She thought that she found that Soccer was the national sport of Denmark, apparently its Handball! This brought much mirth to Room Eight as Handball is a game played by some students at interval and lunch break, but is for fun only. We've actually researched Handball the sport, and its of course quite different from New Zealand Handball - this video was filmed by Mitchell and Kris and demonstrates what most New Zealanders think 'Handball' is.

Melville Intermediate - Photo Option Photo Challenge

Today for Digital Photography during our Melville Intermediate School Options Mr Webb had a special challenge for the Digital Photography students.  They had to create a slideshow that feature four sets of five pictures with the Themes being the Library, Around Melville, Odd and Students of MIS.  Students had 15 minutes to take the picture so they were under a huge amount of pressure! However they've done a wonderful job. We've decided to have the voting available online until next week, when we'll close the poll, thank you for agreeing to vote in the competition for each of the teams. The learning intention for the students was that the students were creative and interesting within the confines of the school.

Melville Intermediate - Visit Vonsild School Blog!

We've just being making contact in the last few days with the students of Vonsild School in Denmark.  Our students have really enjoyed visiting their wonderful class page, its filled with videos and other work that is interesting and really gets you thinking about the students and what they are like.  We held a class brainstorming session about Denmark and although we've had contact with most of the world, there wasn't  a whole lot of information that Room Eight could come up with, that's all going to change as we start looking at Denmark as a nation tomorrow and learning about our friends on the other side of the world, in the meantime you can visit Vonsild School in Denmark by clicking here and check out their wonderful students work!

Melville Intermediate - NZAIMS 2011 Here we come!

Melville Intermediate are preparing to compete again at the NZAIMS Tournament.  This tournament is the premiere sports competition for Y7 and Y8 students in New Zealand.  Last year there were over 100 schools and 4,000 competitors, with over 800 officials in Tauranga for the week of competition.  In 2010 Melville Intermediate entered Boys Soccer, where the team came 14th, Hip Hop where our team finished 4th by 0.5 of a percent and Girls Basketball.

Our Basketball teams over the last two years have a proud record of success, last year our Girls made the semi finals before being defeated by Kura O Te Koutu from Rotorua and finishing 4th.  Our 2009 team was undefeated for the entire tournament and crowned national champions at the conclusion of the games! This years team has started preparation by playing at the YMCA on Tuesday night.   The team is in a Boys/Mixed competition and has already defeated Maeroa Intermediate and St Andrews Middle School.   Last week the Girls were defeated 35-45 by the Flyers Lakers, although they were dissapointed to lose they managed to play a forty minute game with five players and no reserves! Today Melville Intermediate played against the KBC Sting and defeated them 43-33.   Kobe managed to score 17 points, in her first game for the year, Mata scored an impressive 16 and Sita contributed well with 10.   The team has three more games in the 'A' pool against top opposition before the play offs.   This footage is from Melville Intermediates game against the Sting tonight, the AIMS Games might be six months away but its approaching fast.

Melville Intermediate - Skyping with St Marys School

This morning students from Room Eight held a Skyping session with students from St Marys School in Mosgiel, in the South Island.   We covered the students Mihi who were reciting it to Hayze and Mackenzie and the students also talked about their schools, the similarities and the differences.  The students spoke for over half an hour and we here at Melville Intermediate really enjoyed the experience, judging by the posts on their page St Marys did too! You can click on their class page by clicking here.

Yesterday Mackenzie and I Skyped with St Marys School, Room Seven. They saw a link of Mackenzie and I in the CPA doing the Hawaiian dance for my Grandmothers Birthday. I was so surprised that they only had around two hundred students from Y1 to Y8 and we have nearly 300 students from Y7 and Y8. It was great talking to Room Seven and I really enjoyed it.

I talked with a few of the students in extension cooking, who explained to me that they were making pasta. Then I went to the music room, I filmed Mr Bell and some of his students in the drum room, working on a recording. More students were filled in the guitar room and the recording studio. Manson who is amazing on the guitar played something. A few of the girls were in the recording studio were recording a song played on ukulele and with vocals.
