Melville Intermediate - Camp Ruatuna 2010 Video

On Friday Room 6, Room 8 and Room 14 went to Camp. We did two activities and did not get to do the other one. The last actiivty was the waterslide. It was very fun but it did hurt a little as well. There is a little hole with flax as a cushion and when you hit the bump you could fly up as well and when you land it could hurt a little. Me and Codie went down and I crashed into him and some other people! After the waterslide we got dry and dressed back to go back to school. Recount by Dominic.

Melville Intermediate - Kaiya's Camp Recount

When we were going to Camp I thought that we'd be going by car but we went by bus to Lake Ruatuna. We only went for the day. We were doing four things at Camp. We had to make some Damper and cook sausages. Room 8's first task was to make a splinter and a stretcher and to carry one person on the stretcher, from a log to a trough that was our first task. Second was to make a bivouac. A bivouac is like a little house on the ground. I think there were five groups. I was by myself because I wanted to see if I could do it. Our third task was fun because that was the water-slide. We were on the waterslide for thirty minutes. The thirty minutes felt long but that was cool. On my first go going down the waterslide I was nervous because I asked the other two classes and they made me nervous. They were room 2 and 14. When I went down it wasn't even sore, it was fun. The slide was made out of a big tarpolin. After our turn was over we had to pack up and get changed to go back to school. Then we packed up everything else that we brought and we helped carry stuff back to the bus. Then we went back to school. When we got back from Lake Ruatuna we had to go to class. Then the bell rang to go home

Melville Intermediate - Making Damper

At Camp every student was put into a cooking group. These groups had to cook their lunch with consisted of Damper and Sausages. Students were given the material to start a fire, had to prepare it, and it was lit under the supervision of a teacher. They then had to maintain the fire so that they'd be able to successfully cook their dinner.

Melville Intermediate - Camp Video 2

This is part two of challenge one - bush first aid. Students were split into groups and had to pretend a student had a broken leg and then, using material found only in the bush construct a stretcher for that person to be carried to safety. The students who were injured had to be lifted by one or more people in the group between the big log at the base of the main camp hill to a water trough about 50 meters away!

Problem: One of the members of your group has a broken leg. Can you construct a splint and a stretcher and with the other members of the group carry the injured person to safety? Students had to get into groups of around 4 students and using material only from a section of bush nearby construct a stretcher.
