Melville Intermediate - ANZAC Day 2012
We've been looking at ANZAC day which is a public holiday for the entire country on Wednesday 25th April 2012. As part of that we had some students voluntarily bring in items from home on Tuesday. Mr Webb was very pleasantly surprised when Bianca brought in a very, very special family treasure to show everyone - some medals that were awarded to her Poppa for World War Two. These were very well looked after while they were at school, so special they had to be left in the safe, as they had a very special role on ANZAC Day they were due to be worn at the ANZAC day service at Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Melville Intermediate - ANZAC Day Poems
We Will Remember Them
We wake up at 5:30am,
Shake the dust from our eyes,
Going to hear a tragic story,
Where not many survived.
The ANZACs reached the shores,
in their destination - Turkey,
As they walked along the sandy cove.
They were in Gallipoli.
Look at those boys at war in thier teens,
They used to think it was fun,
If they'd have known what it was like,
They'd never use that toy as a gun.
Sitting down in a trench,
With stubby pencil in hand,
Writing letters of hate and sorrow,
To be sent across the land.
As mother Elizabeth stands by the door hearing the telegram boy,
So many things go through her head,
As the tears well up in her eyes,
Whispering "please dont Johnnnie be dead"
She hears the knock on Mrs Parkison's door,
And breates a sigh of relief,
There's a mournful cry "not my Eddie"
She goes over to share their grief.
Much heartache later,
These boys get off a train,
They went to war without a care,
However their life won't be the same.
Mothers waiting no one to greet
They try to show their gladness
Their smile is pure but the eyes don't shine
They are windows to their sadness.
Another mother waiting
She set the table for four
But there will only be three dining tonight
As darling Alfie is no more.
Many years have passed now,
With tales of loss and regret
So we gather together on Anzac day,
least we forget, least we forget.

Melville Intermediate - ANZAC Day Poetry
ANZAC DAY
This A is for the Australians that fought for me
This N and Z is for New Zealanders that made us free
This A is for the anguish as they marched to their death
This C is for their cry as they took their last breath.
This D is for the danger they did face
This A is for the anger from our race
And this Y is a question
Why did it have to be?
I hope your ANZAC DAY is stunning,
But remember why we're free.
I hope your Anzac Day us brilliant but as you drink your cup of tea
I ask a little favour please - remember why we're free.
Remember what happened on those gray and dusty nights
Remember all those soldiers dirt and blood stained sights
Remember all the wives at home in bed
Remember all the worries as they sat and read.
Remember all the tears that fell like rain.
Remember all the wishes that got washed down the drain.
Remember all the lives it did cost.
Remember all the arms and legs that were lost.
But remember also something happy
Don't just get sad and sappy.
Remember all the survivors with tales to share
Remember all the soldiers - how they did care.
Remember how they fought for you and me
Remember how they fought so we could be free.
So next time you are sad or down in the dumps,
Just remember these things - it will give you sad and happy goose bumps.

Melville Intermediate - ANZAC Day

Today is Saturday 25th April. This is a special day for New Zealand and Australia as this is officially ANZAC Day. ANZAC is an acronym that stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. The day of remembrance is an important day to remember soldiers who have died fighting for our countries. In reference to this our site is only posting this today, with a link to other sites associated by clicking here. The Poppy is official symbol for ANZAC day to raise funds for veteran soldiers and former soldiers.
