Melville Intermediate - Handball in New Zealand

NZ Handball Demo for Denmark from myles webb on Vimeo.

One of the sites that we've really enjoyed visiting recently has been Vonslid School Blog in Denmark, it caused us to research Denmark because we discovered that we didn't know very much about it as a country. One of our students, Lana created a slideshow about the comparison between Denmark and New Zealand. She thought that she found that Soccer was the national sport of Denmark, apparently its Handball! This brought much mirth to Room Eight as Handball is a game played by some students at interval and lunch break, but is for fun only. We've actually researched Handball the sport, and its of course quite different from New Zealand Handball - this video was filmed by Mitchell and Kris and demonstrates what most New Zealanders think 'Handball' is.

  1. HI Room 8
Great video - It really shows how easily we can misunderstand each other around the world - what we understand from certain words. Who could imagine handball could be played like this. Thanks for making me wiser......We have an old post on our blog which you can see. The player in the video is on the Danish National team:

  4. Hi New Zealanders!
I am studying to be a teacher at the University of South Alabama in the United States and have been assigned to follow and comment on your blog as part of an assignment for Dr. Strange's EDM310 class. We are learning about ways to incorporate technology into our classrooms and also, ways to use technology to connect different cultures. Isn't it amazing the things that you can learn about people around the world through blogs and also all the things that you can add to your blog? I think it is great that you are following the Vonslid School class blog from Denmark and learning to compare and contrast your different cultures. I have always enjoyed learning about different cultures and wish we could have done things like this when I was younger! We had to write letters and wait on them to come in the mail. How many of you still write letters? I am willing to bet not many of you do since blogging, email, Skype, etc., are so much faster and more convenient.
As for my culture we actually play the opposite of handball...football! We play a little bit of soccer but I had really only heard of handball; it was interesting to see you guys playing a different sport that you all seem to enjoy.
You guys seem to have a lot of interesting and interactive programs and projects going on in your school! I would just like to say thank you for sharing them with us. :)

  5. Hi, my name is Kelsey Robinson and I am also a student in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class at the University of South Alabama. As Carly told you, we are learning many ways to use technology in classrooms. I really enjoyed your video and thank you for sharing it. It's really interesting to see the large variety of games that different cultures play. Handball reminds me of a game we play here called four square.

I hope you learn more about technology in your school and I hope you enjoy what you have learned so far. Thank you, again, for sharing your video with us!

    Kelsey

  6. Hi, my name is Lisa May and I too am a student at the University of South Alabama in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class. I really enjoyed watching your video! It is amazing how "handball" can mean so many different things. My son's play "handball" in our driveway. They use a tennis ball and throw it against the wall of the house. They have tried to teach me but I am not very good at it! They also play it at recess at school. They are about your age. Isn't it cool that they like playing the same things you do even though we live so far away?

The world really is a small place and technology is making it even smaller. It is so easy now to communicate with people around the world! Your school is doing a great job incorporating technology into your education. I hope you enjoy using the technology and continue to develop it as you advance in school.

Thanks again for sharing your movie! It was awesome!
