Melville Intermediate - Recycling at School

Room 8 has two enviroagents at School. Keegan has been working on a proposal for School wide recycling of plastics. To prove his point today he went with Kalem and Jamie to a school rubbish bin after interval. Armed with plastic gloves he was out to prove that there's waste that could be recycled. This video shows his findings. Filmed at Melville Intermediate on Thursday 20th August 2009 by Jamie.

  1. Looks like you have a couple investigative journalists at your school. Maybe they can follow this up with some student and teacher interviews about why some have problems with recycling. Maybe they can make a documentary on landfills/recycling. Good stuff!

  2. Hi Keegan,
What a dreadful result! But i think you will find that the same result would be found in many schools. the recycling message has not got through yet. We have been looking at how to make use of objects at least one more time before they are recycled. Did you know that a regular plastic bag takes 1000 years to break down at the tip?
So what is the next step for your school?

  3. Good on you boys. We all need reminders about how much rubbish we are producing and how we can reduce it. It looked like about 1/3 of that bin was recyclable plastic, it would make a significant difference if that didn't have to go into landfill.

  4. Hi again,
I was just checking out some environmental web sites for my class and found this movie which is way above the heads of my kids but would be a great resource for you guys. it sure makes you think about your own part in the chain and the need to advocate for the environment.
