Melville Intermediate - Winter Olympics Cheer 2013

All this week students from Melville Intermediate School have been competing against Murrays Bay Intermediate, Te Puke Intermediate, Glen Eden Intermediate and Henderson Intermediate at the Winter Olympics Sports Camp in Totara Springs, Matamata.  Its been a full on week of competition for the 37 strong Melville team which culminated last night in the Cheer performance and finals night.  Melville Intermediates 2013 Cheer is below.

Melville Intermediate - Cultural Exchange with Saitama City

We are very lucky to have a group of students from Saitama City in Japan visiting with us this week.  Yesterday we had a large sports exchange with the students - nearly three hundred combined from both Saitama City and Melville Intermediate.  We also had class cultural exchanges on Monday afternoon of the 12th of August.  Footage from that event was recorded by Jamie and Wattana from Room Five.

My buddys name is Shino. My buddy is very cool she is a person that will try anything she is very pretty. She gave me a badge it says Hamilton with the New Zealand  flag and Saitama with the Japanese flag. We had a sports day yesterday and my buddy did everything and she enjoyed it. I gave her a present it was a t-shirt with a kiwi on it but it but it was a key ring and I gave her a kiwi but it was a key ring.  Chloe, Room Five,
 

At Melville Intermediate we hosted some Japanese students from Saitama in Japan we had this sport block where we had to do a sport with these students. First we played some touch rugby with them and we first taught them how to play the game and we sorted out the teams when they were sorted we started to play the game I passed it to one of the students He ran forward and then ran back because he was scared that he was going to get tug. When he was tug he passed it to Nichola and she ran and we scored the game went very quickly it was disappointing because it went to fast but it has been an enjoyable experience with the Saitama students this year they have taught me a lot like give things a go! Melville Intermediate - Saitama City Cultural Exchange

The students from Melville Intermediate School are very lucky at present to have a group of student visitors from Saitama City in Japan.  The students and the students of Melville Intermediate have been involved in a variety of learning activities.  On Monday afternoon the students engaged in a cultural exchange.  Melville Intermediate taught the students from Saitama City several action songs.  This video is of the lesson.  Filmed by Jamie and Wattana from Room Five.

 On the 8^th August 2013, some of the Melville Intermediate students were standing in the middle of the tech courts waving and saying Hello the all the Japanese students who had come all the way from Saitama (Hamilton’s sister city). Everyone was excited to see them and we couldn’t wait to do really fun activities with them. Yesterday we did an exhilarating fitness rotation with them. Everyone enjoyed it and some of us learned that the Japanese are really good at dancing and Double Dutch. Also The Saitama students have been going on trips around Hamilton and they were very lucky to meet the Mayor of Hamilton. They have been in the classrooms a few times and when they have, they have been paired up with some buddies and done activities with us about Japan. They are leaving tomorrow and we will be very sad to see them go since we have so much fun with them. By Elizabeth

Last Friday saw the Waikato Intermediate Schools Battle of the Bands Competition for 2013 'Pulse".  Melville Intermediate were the defending champions and had another hugley successful year.  Trinity from Room One received recognition for her amazing effort - footage of which is included here below.  Edited by Josh from Room Five, this footage from the audience was recorded at the event on Friday 9th August 2013.

For modules on Mondays and Wednesday there are a class of students who are in Room Five who are creating charatcers for a Stop Animation.  The character building has taken the past two sessions and the students are going to be story boarding and animating for the next three weeks.  This is a look at some of the charatcters that have been created by the students.  Some of these you might recognise!

Melville Intermediate - Minecraft Collaborative Site

We've had a Minecraft craze sweeping Room Five at the moment - our students are very excited by the game and the possibilities.  One site that we've really enjoyed look at is from Mr Wood and his collaborative Minecraft Quest site.  There are currently a range of challenges and examples on the site with more still to come.  You can visit Mr Woods wonderful site by clicking on the link here.

Since the end of last week the students of Room Five have had an opportunity to take part in the quests that are listed on the site.  We're writing about our experiences completing the quests, taking screen shots of the 'build' and will be posting them on our class page later this week.

Melville Intermediate - Challenge for Minister of Education

On Friday 2nd of August Melvlle Intermediate had a very special visitor to our school, the Minsiter of Education, Hekia Parata.   The whole school welcome her for her very special visit which included a wero (challenge) at the entrace to Melville Intermediate School, which was made by Matua Tutu and the Boys from Room One.   This video was filmed by Manish and Nathan H from Room Five.

Wiremu wrote this about his involvement in the Wero:
'When Hekia Parata arrived my stomach instantly felt all funny.  I was scared that I might get something wrong.  But in the end I overcame my fear and done everything right'.

Tre wrote this about his involvement:
'I was nervous and scared when I spotted her in the car along the street.  One of the teachers gave me the go sign and I went with my mean as taiaha'

Melville Intermediate - Managed Learning Network Announcement from Hekia Parata

The Minister of Education Hekia Parata came to visit our school today after lunch and she talked about a new managed network learning programme for all schools.  As part of the announcement she said that there would be:

• Uncapped data for all schools
• Shared portal for apps
• shared teaching and learning with other schools across New Zealand
• $700 million dollar managed network

We welcomed her with a Whakatau, and we recorded her welcome and also her speech.  We then edited her speech to include the announcement about the new network and posted it on our class page.  The video below is her annoucement - filmed this afternoon at Melville Intermediate on Friday 2nd August by Nathan H and Manish from Melville Intermediate School.  Edited by Josh and Manish from Room Five.

Melville Intermediate - Selwyn House inspire our writing

Today in class we were looking for an energizer with our writing.   We were looking for a problem to solve or something to contribute too.  Of course our class is signed up for AoteaQuadblogging with three other classes from around New Zealand and we saw that our friends from Selwyn House in Christchurch had posted their new unit of study - but even better, posted a Google Doc of a series of problem and how to solve them.  We took the problems, modified them slightly, and then used them as our writing task for today.

Our Quadblogging buddies from 8C in Selwyn House, Christchurch have started their new unit of inquiry, and this term they are looking at 'Sharing Our Planet' although its only the first week of school they've already used Google Drive to share the starting of their unit., which is something that we are going to do this morning in class, just before interval.

Room Twelve from New River Primary School are looking at 'Cultures of the World' this term.  They've started by learning a Samoan Sasa and having experts coming in for the tutition.  You can read about that and see the pictures.
