Melville Intermediate - Maori Mihi Example

This video is Hayze's explanation of a Maori Mihi, followed by her Mihi. We have put the words in English and Maori on the screen as she says them so you can follow along. There are some key phrases that you need to be listening for in her Mihi - they are:
  • Ko Taupiri te Maunga – Taupiri is my Mountain.
  • Ko Waikato te Awa - Waikato is my River.
  • Ko Tainui te Waka - Tainui is my Waka (Canoe).
  • Ko Waenga te Whanau - Waenga is my family.
  • Ko Tammy Toku Mama - Tammy is my Mother.
  • Ko Robin Toku Papa - Robin is my Father.
  • Ko Hayze ahau - Hayze is my name.
Just like last year and the year before if you would like help with learning of your Mihi or Maori Language in general please get in contact with our students by leaving a comment or sending us an email we have students who are willing to help with your students learning.

Melville Intermediate - Extension Cooking

While its just been the start of the year here in New Zealand some of our students have already started involving themselves in a number of exciting programs. Were currently running extension lessons with students in Music and Cooking. This video which was shot on Monday 13th February 2011 is of students in the Cooking Room. There's no script so the students are explaining their way through the activities 'on the fly' or as they go along. Really. Filmed by Bradley and Chris from Room Eight. The cake was nice too.

Melville Intermediate - Maori Mihi

A Maori Mihi is a traditional introduction that is given to other people usually on a Marae. At Melville Intermediate School all Y7 and Y8 students are required to know their own individual Mihi and be able to recite it. Last week we started working on these with our 2011 class. The first two examples are by Hayze and Mackenzie. We've deliberately left out the information in English to see just how much of the Mihi you can understand by listening. Filmed in the Room Eight ICT Lab area, Melville Intermediate School, Hamilton, Waikato on Friday 11th November 2011.

Melville Intermediate - Tongan Dumplings

This video was created by a group of students from Room Eight at the end of 2010. The students read a journal story about Pacific Island meals and decided to find out about other meals. Fauiki from Room Eight is a student of Tongan decent, and so she told the other students about Tongan dumplings. Lo and behold the students searched the internet for Tongan Dumplings and found a recipe and this is the result! The tasting at the end was authentic!
