For the final weeks of school for term one, 2013, which concludes this coming week, the students of Room Five are completing video tours and documentaries of Melville Intermediate School. We've been involved in the planning for several days with our students, refined their work by having it shared and edited with their peers, and begun the publishing process. They haven't finished yet because the intention is for the students to look at the feedback they receive from their publishing and their peers, refine their work further and look at re-shooting and re-editing for the final week of school, Filmed on Friday April 12th 2013 by Cody from Room Five, presented by Manish from Room Five this is a tour and explanation of the school Library at Melville Intermediate School.

Melville Intermediate - Lunches around the world!
We've had a fantastic collaborative response to our lunches request to our friends in New Zealand and around the world. It has started because our students want to change our own lunch menu and canteen/tuck shop. We appealed for assistance from our friends. We had some fantastic responses from Waimukau School, Mrs Bizy and Tokomaru School and If Only the Best Birds Sang. Today we received some fantastic additional responses - we heard from our friends in New Town Kapai Kiwis in the United States, Open the Door to B4 from Reefton, New Zealand and The Techie Kids from Michican, USA.
We knew a little about the lunch system in the USA from what we've talked about with other classrooms before and what we've seen on TV shows and movies, but it was wonderful that Miss Lologa took the time to provide link with their lunch menus, and also on top of that, took the time to take some photographs from the lunch cafeteria today. Thank you so much!
Our second exciting thing today was that Mrs Mackenzie, the teacher from the wonderful Open the Door to B4 Class page. She sent us a fax this morning, it was a really interesting exercise for our class because we had students in the class who hadn't heard of a fax before and didn't know what one was. We're creating a display in the classroom of all the menus and order forms that we've received.
Finally we received a lot of feedback from Mrs Moore and The Techie Kids in Michican. What we loved about hearing from them was to clear up an issue about 'Canteen' which is what we'd asked however in the United States of America a 'canteen' has a completly different meaning to what it does here in New Zealand, being a device that carries water as oppossed to a place to buy your lunch.
On behalf of Room Five @ Melville Intermediate School I'd like to thank everyone that has contributed towards our work so far, we haven't finished yet but to everyone whose contributed to our collaboration or helped in any way, thank you so much.

Melville Intermediate - Lunch Orders from around New Zealand and the world!
Damien and Wattana have been very excited about the feedback that they've received from our lunch orders around New Zealand. We've had responses from three schools so far. Some of the students at our school and in our class have expressed an interest and a desire to have better lunches, so we though that two of our students, and our students representatives in the classroom Damien and Wattana, would harness the power and traffic of our class page and see what other schools and classrooms are ordering for lunch. The Boys have also ventured further afield and have started asking classrooms around the world what they have for lunch and what you can order...
It started with a reply from our original tweet some twenty minutes later and we had a link to the lunch orders at Waimuku Primary School. This caused surprize to our students because at Waimuku you can only order your lunch on Fridays. It also caused a discussion in Room Five, everyone agreed that the idea of having sushi for lunch was tasty, but would we be prepared to pay seven dollars for it seemed to be a bit of sticking point.
Then today we received two more replies. The first came from Mrs Mel B and her students wonderful blog at Tokomaru School. She sent us a detailed reply that featured her school menu and information. They also featured our request as a post on their page, you can read their reply by clicking on the link to thier page here. We were surprized again that the lunch order system work only once a week, although everyone in the class was impressed by the menu that the school featured and what was available for the students to purchase at school to eat.
Finally we also heard back today from our very special friends from 'If only the best birds sang' in Ireland. There was yet another surprize waiting in stall for us - in Ireland at their school students bring their own lunches and don't have an ordering system.
We decided that we preferred the fact that some choices were available to students in New Zealand, even if they were a little limited. But were not stopping there, we'd still like as much feedback as we can over this issue - we'd love you to leave a comment, or a link or take time to explain how your lunches are ordered and what system you have in place.

Melville Intermediate - Reitu's Art
When I first started in Art Mrs Patterson read us a story called 'In the Beginning'. We had to choose one of the Maori Gods and draw and paint on a large piece of paper. After we had finished that we went over to the I.C.T lab to recearch about Ta Moko when we went back over to the Art room we made paper Mache masks of one of the Maori Gods and when we finished painting it we had to draw a Moko on the mask. After tht she read us a story about how Maui fished up th North Island and we had to draw a Fish Hook.

Melville Intermediate - Can you help Damien please!
HI this is Damien & Wattana and we are school councillors from Melville Intermediate school and we need help with our canteen we are asking all the schools in NZ to send us their menu of your canteen!
We would like to compare with other schools their menus for lunches, their canteens or tuck shops or how their students buy food at school. We want to do this because we would like to get ideas to improve what we have for sale at our school canteen to our students. You could send us your school menus or order forms by taking a photo or scanning them, you could film footage of your tuck shops or canteens in action, perhaps at lunchtime or perhaps without students in them (we will be doing the same at Melville Intermedaite) you can then leave a comment to us letting us know what the links are so we can view them. Thanks for being available.

Melville Intermediate - Glenview Teachers Harlem Shake
Mr Fawcett, and Glenview Primary School have done it again with their second Harlem Shake video! The first featured the students of Room One, which inspired the students of Room Six (which is our neighbours next door!) to create their own version. Well Glenview have upped the ante with this version of the Harlem Shake performed by their staff. Mr Fawcett, a good friend of ours, is prominent in this video.

Melville Intermediate - Camp 2013 Down Hill Trolley Racing
This video, filmed by Jamie and Elizabeth from Room Five, is of one of the key activities from the School Camp at the Narrows in Cambridge which was held earlier this month. Students had to navigate a down hill course through the use of a trolley, which was controlled and steered by the driver. Some students found it a challenged, we defiantly had some spills and thrills, but it was another great overall activity from our wonderful time at Camp.
