Melville Intermediate - Options 2010 Part Two

This is part two of our options tour. All students of Melville Intermediate School have an elective each Thursday afternoon. They are able to choose from a wide variety of subject options. This video, created on Thursday 23rd September 2010, the second to last day of term was created by Samm and Kelly, touring around the Options classes so you could have an opportunity to see inside what our students get to experience.

Melville Intermediate - Were #1 Finally!

A special occasion has occurred today, we've been tracking since early in the year the position of our Maori Mihi video, which the students create at the start of each year at Melville Intermediate School.

Maori Mihi Tutorial from myles webb on Vimeo.

A Maori Mihi is a greeting to introduce yourself. In March this was right from the start one of the most viewed videos on our page. Today the video finally reached the '#1' spot for Google searches in New Zealand. A very proud moment, but also on the same day Room Eight scored their second #1 success as Maori Mihi Template, a slide show that we created in 2009 also finally went to '#1' on the Google Search Engine.

These are huge successes for Room Eight @ Melville Intermediate School and we will be sharing these with the students when we return to school next term, in little over a week.

Melville Intermediate - Student Blogging Challenge!

Its the School Holidays in New Zealand, we're currently nearing the end of our first week of a two week break. Our students will be back at school Monday 11th October. In the meantime, the Edublog Student Blogger Challenge is continuing. Now with our students on holidays you would think that we wouldn't be able to participate, but as it happens one of our classroom activities has been made as a suggestion and has been taken as a challenge for all the contribution classrooms!

You can click on the link to the week two challenge here. Our part that we contributed to is the video 'challenge'.

'3. Create a quick brief tour of your classroom or school (walking around showing the grounds/playgrounds/classroom) and then embed it or upload it to the classroom blog. You might use vimeo , a slideshow, photopeach, YouTube, Smile Box etc. Next week visit other classes who did the same activity and compare your schools or classrooms. Thanks Mr Webb for this suggestion.'

Firstly, have a look at 'Part Two of the Music Room from 2010' this was created by Shania, Kelly and Nathalie from Room 8 and is a tour showing people around the world what goes on in our School Music Room, it also features the school music teacher Mr Bell.

Classrooms around the world participating in the blog have to create a video of their school as an introduction. Students of Room Eight will remember this task from the start of the year back in February. It seems so long ago but then we had students create the following work.

This video was Samm tour of the confidence course and created back in March, Samm was too shy at this point to do the presentation so she handed the responsibilities over to Nathalie from Room Eight, as this was an introductory lesson the focus was on the school confidence course.

Also Room Eight Students don't forget that we have two classroom pages that we are regularly commenting on as part of the Edublog Challenge, the ones that are above and below us on the classroom link (you can click on that here). The first is Mr Ferreirae Class in the USA and the second is Mrs Theriault in Quebec, Canada.

Finally this last Tour of Melville Intermediate School video is a bit special this was created in 2009 by three students, Destyn, Kaiya and Cleveland, this was the very first video that they ever created and we used it (and still use it now!) as a test video to discuss before we publish work! Kaiya is now a member of Room Seven, Cleveland is now part of Room One but they are still fondly remembered.

Melville Intermediate - Goodbye Room Eight

Today we said Goodbye to Room Eight for two reasons. Firstly its the school holidays in New Zealand, we have two weeks off school. Secondly we're having the rear wall of Room Eight demolished during the holidays and some of next term, we've had to move as a result into Room Nine. We're really excited about the move because it means that our new Room Eight will be rewired and able to work more consistently with our computers. So onwards and upwards for the future.

It was an extremely close competition with the winners being announced at assembly this morning. The sixth and final speech in the competition belonged to Amos from Room 12, who was also a finalist last year. This is his school speech in its entirety, recorded by Fauiki and Terrina from Room Eight and filmed on Wednesday 22nd September 2010

Melville Intermediate - Good Luck Otis

On Saturday Otis from Room 8 is travelling to Serbia in Europe. Otis is traveling there with his brother to compete in the World Kick Boxing Championship. Otis is competing in the Under 47kg Under 12 Competition. In addition to training Otis and his family have done a huge amount of fund-raising.

On the way back from this event Otis will be travelling through Dubai and then Thailand, where he will be doing some Mai-Thai Kick Boxing training on the way back. We are hoping to be able to Skype with Otis from Serbia and also there's a Facebook Page set up for the Trip with results and footage from the event in Serbia. We will post a link to it on this site.

Otis is pictured above left, with his brother Don who is also attending the World Champs. We are excited for them to have such a wonderful opportunity and wish Otis and his brother the best of luck. (Credit: Photo is from Stuff.co.nz)
