Melville Intermediate - Farewell Brend

The last day of term for Term Three 2009 was sad as after a term we bid farewell to Brend who'd joined us from Korea for a week. We managed to film some footage before he departed and will be putting this online later in the holidays, but it was a wonderful experience for the students to have someone in class from another culture who was able to teach us things, and we look forward to hearing from him online as we know he will be following us from his new class in Korea!

Melville Intermediate - Word Search Mania

It started with Brend creating an activity before he returned to Korea from our class, suddenly everyone in Room Eight wants to create their own Wordsearch from Wordsearch.Com. These are just some of the Wordsearches created by students today:

Melville Intermediate - For Mr Piper - a 'typical' day for us.

The students in Room 8 were asked to describe a typical day for them, so that people who are following us on the Blogging Challenge and the Classes that we've been helping from Mr. Pipers Class in the USA get a better idea.

Molinda described the bell times by writing: " In New Zealand we start school at 8:40am and we have a interval/playtime at 10:30am to 10:50am. We start lunch at 12:30pm and it finishes at 1:15pm. School ends at 3:15pm."

Destin wrote: "The time that I wake up each morning is 7am. I make my own lunch, I have breakfast and then my Aunty brings me to school in the morning. I get to school at 8:00am. I do good work and our morning tea is at 10:30am and the time it finishes is 10:50am. Then we work for 1 hour twenty minutes and then have lunch for 45 minutes. We work again until school finishes at 3:10pm. When school finishes I go to the High School where my Aunty works and then my Aunty takes me home. I get changed into my home clothes and go and play until dark, and at 10:30pm I go to bead, thats what I do."

Melville Intermediate - Questions for Mr Piper 3

We were looking at ways of answering some of the 78(!) questions left for us by the students from Mr Piper's Class in the USA. We decided to answer the questions similar to something that we saw on Mr C's Classblog earlier in the year. We rotated a group of students around asking them and passed the question reading to everyone... done in about three minutes at the end of lunch before the students had to change classes for their Y7 Option Classes. Filmed on Thursday 24th September 2009.

Melville Intermediate - Melville Survivor Promo

This Photostory has been created by Bailey from Room 8, he's the director for an Episodic Childs Blog Serial that we will be shooting next Term. The idea behind this is to involve the class in a larger than usual production, we have been assigning roles in the background and brainstorming ideas so we can get straight into it next term, the first week of school back.

Melville Intermediate - Speech Topics 2009

This week all students were given the following speech topics - we have the last day of school tomorrow (Friday) before a two week break for the Term Three holidays. During the holidays students will be preparing a speech on one of the following six topics which they will deliver in term four, week two:
  • Winning is not so important as participating?
  • Do animals really think or do we only they they do?
  • Tagging is art.
  • I-Pods are Anti-Social.
  • We care too much about the way we look rather than who we really are.
  • Should more Green spaces (parks) be set aside for community use?

We would be interested to hear of any good sites or work that would help us with this!

Melville Intermediate - Hastings Vs. Melville AIMS Final

This video is some of the highlights of the 2009 AIMS Basketball Games Girls Final between Hastings Intermediate School and Melville Intermediate School. Hastings were the defending National Champions, undeafeated all week and a team that had racked up some dominating scores leading to the final. Melville were entering the nationals for the first time in Basketball, and likewise went through Pool Play and the Semi-Finals with a run of victories. The two best teams were in the finals, as it should be... the first quarter was tied at 10-10, in the second Melville applied the pressure and by half time had a 30 point lead! The Final Score being 67-33 to Melville who took their first AIMS National title. Filmed at Tauranga's Mt Manganui Action Center by Mr Webb on Thursday 6th September 2009.

By clicking on his picture to your left it will take you to a copy of the word find!

Thanks to our friends at Room 10 at Morrinsville Intermediate School for this idea!

Melville Intermediate - Answering Mr Piper

As you know, were currently collaborating with Mr Piper's class in Milwakee, Wisconsin. There the class is studying Australia and New Zealand for Social Studies. We offerered to 'ask an expert' using our students as the experts, its been a great experience but what we didn't expect was that Mr Pipers students would ask us over 50 questions! We selected 10 that we thought we'd answer today, and we'll get to the others later this week! Here's some of our students answers to the first ten:
1. Have you seen a Kiwi bird before?
Vitolina: I know how they look, but I haven't seen one in my life. A real Kiwi lives in the forest and not near peoples houses. Molinda: No. Michael: Its nocturnal so no-one sees it much.
Nick: No. Nicole: No, I've never seen one in my life. Kaiya: No!
2. Have you ever seen a Rugby game before?
Vitolina: Of course! People in New Zealand like watching other teams vs. each other! Kaiya: Yes. Nicole: No. Nicholas: Yes. Michael: No. Molinda: No.
3. What is the Weather like?
Molinda: Cold, hot, sunny and windy. Michael - sometimes bad and good! Nicholas - Very sunny as we have just started spring. Nicole - its spring. Kaiya - Sunny. Mr Webb (Room 8 Teacher) - in New Zealand at the moment we're just started spring. The temperature would be in the high teens to low twenties at the moment, as were heading into Summer. It never gets cold enough to snow in Hamilton. even in Winter.
4. Do you play American Football?
Nicole: Yes we do. Kaiya: Not often. Vitolina: No. Nick: Not much. Michael: Only in clubs. Molinda: No. Mr Webb: Not really, there's three or four clubs in New Zealand in total but its not a popular sport.
5. Favourite Animals/Food/Counties/Sport: Molinda: KFC, McDonalds, Burger King, Australia, Soccer, Runnig, America. Michael: Rotweiler Puppies. Nick: Animal-Cat, Food - Burger, Country - Spain, Sports - Soccer. Vitolina - my favourite country is Samoa, my favourite food is rice - pasta and chop suey. My favourite sport is Netball, Rugby and Volleyball. My favourite animals are dogs, rabbits, Koala and least is Kangaroo. Nicole: Animals - Bunny Rabbits, Hamster, Puppies. Counties - USA, Phillipines, NZ. Foods: Shrimp, Chicken, Ice Cream, Banana Cake, Crabs, Lobsters, Sports - Badminton, Swimming. NZ Foods - KFC, McDonalds. We will put part two online tomorrow!
