Melville Intermediate - Glenview Teachers Harlem Shake

Mr Fawcett, and Glenview Primary School have done it again with their second Harlem Shake video! The first featured the students of Room One, which inspired the students of Room Six (which is our neighbours next door!) to create their own version.  Well Glenview have upped the ante with this version of the Harlem Shake performed by their staff.   Mr Fawcett, a good friend of ours, is prominent in this video.

Melville Intermediate - Camp 2013 Down Hill Trolley Racing

This video, filmed by Jamie and Elizabeth from Room Five, is of one of the key activities from the School Camp at the Narrows in Cambridge which was held earlier this month.  Students had to navigate a down hill course through the use of a trolley, which was controlled and steered by the driver.  Some students found it a challenged, we defiantly had some spills and thrills, but it was another great overall activity from our wonderful time at Camp.

Melville Intermediate - Nathan Hs Archery Recount

Here is a recount about arhery at Melville Intermediate school Camp 2013 at Narrows Falls Camp.  After Mr Webb calls our our activity and our group name we then go to that activity.  Our activity was archery and we all moved there.  Mr Harrison was waiting for us by the log and there were four bows set up, two compound bows and two long bows.  First we had to sit down on the log while he told us how to fire the bow.  After that he choose four people to up and choose a bow.  Mr Harrison said "open range" and the kids fired.  After they fired they collected their arrows and then the next four went up.  I was one of those four.  I choose the red compound bow.  Mr Harrison said 'range open' so I loaded an arrow and let go.  I got a crocodile/yellow ring.  Mr Harrison said 'shot!'.  I loaded another arrow and let go and I got the bulls eye.  I was really proud of myself for getting it in the end and it was so much fun.

Melville Intermediate - BBC's Mind Reading Gopher

In Mathematics for our warm up last week Mr Webb pulled out one of his old favourite links that was originally supplied to him by Allanah K at Appleby School, the famous BBC Mind Reading Gopher.  We've included the link here so that the Room Five students can amaze their friends and we can show some teachers who visit our class a thing or two about Mathematics.

You can click on the link to this page here.

Melville Intermediate - Owen Go Kart Information

Owen from Room Five was at Camp at the Narrows, Cambridge. One of the activities that students were able to participate in and enjoyed very much was the Go Kart and Go Kart racing. Our students when they returned to school were asked to write about one activity in the form of a recount and another in the form of procedural writing. Owen from Room Five choose both about the Go Karts. How to drive a go kart at narrows camp by Owen Room Five. • First you have to learn how to drive it : 1. Knowing your pedals. On the lower left you will see the brake pedal and on the lower right is the accelerate pedal. 2. If your in Trouble - Just under the steering you’ll find a tiny silver switch, this is called the kill switch and it is used in case you are going to crash, it is also the off switch. 3. Safety first - Before you start put on a helmet and ask the supervisor to do the seatbelt for you coz it isn’t easy to do. TIPS • Drive slowly for the first round so you get used to the track • Don’t bump the other kart • Don’t run over people • Always obey these rules • Be careful when your drifting • Don’t be silly around/with the go karts • Do not drive the karts without adult supervision • Don’t go on the track when the karts are racing • Look at these pics

Owen also wrote this recount about his experience on the Go Karts At Narrows Camp I rode on the Go Karts and I drove slowly because I was scared and I thought I was going to crash and die when I had done I decided to go again it was awesome. By Owen PS (Post Scriptum) I forgot to type that none of the helmets fit me proply

Melville Intermediate - Camp Recount Writing

This is the recount of Harry from Room Five about his time at the 2013 Melville Intermediate School Camp at the Narrows Camp, Cambridge.

On the fifth of March Rooms 1,2,5 and 6 went to the Narrows Park for our school Camp.  First thing we did before anything else was we had to unpack our bags and make our beds.  Then we got to settle into our activity groups and then we headed to what activities that we were doing first.  I was on the Go Karts, then the swimming pool.  After 45 minutes we had lunch and then we went to our next activity, mine was the water slide.  The bell rang and our next activity was the Bivoic making - ours wasn't water proof.  After that we had a bit of free time.

As soon as the bell rang again our group was the next to go on the Burma trail.  Mr Willis lead us to the Burma Trail and he said "follow the rope to make your way back to the camp".  After this Burma Trail we went back to have our dinner and dessert.  We brushed our teeth and had a shower, about half an hour later we went to sleep.

This footage is of the Water Slide at Narrows Camp filmed by Elizabeth and Jamie and edited and created into a movie by Cody and Nathan H.  Filmed from 4th March to 6th March at Narrows Camp.

Melville Intermediate - Go Karts at Camp by Jozarn

Shaun taught me how drift and he taught me how to do a donut.  It felt cool when I started to drift on the track.  I made it into the finals (of the Camp Go Kart competition) where I had to race against Mr Willis.  He made me eat his dust.  Tane (from Room Six) he made the fastest time and his time was 47 seconds.  Nathan M, he was the man at drifting, Liam he also ate Mr Willis dust.

This is Jozarns recount about the Go Karting at the Narrows Camp last week, Jozarn brainstormed and planned his writing, edited it, and this is the published  version.  The video that features the Go Kart racing was created by footage shot by Jamie and Elizabeth and was edited and put together by Cody, Owen with Nathan H overseeing it.  Filmed on location at the Narrows Camp, 4th to the 6th March 2013.

Melville Intermediate - Camp Recount Reitu

It was on the 4th of March 2013 it was the first day of Camp at Narrows Park.  We did a few activities before we went to the Go Karts.  First of all we went to the pool at the Camp.  It was really deep.  Then we went to the bush First Aide where we had to make a stretcher out of Bamboo sticks, wood and rope.  Then we went on to Archery and we went from there to the trolley racing.  Finally we went on the Go Karts.

Matua Joe and Sean, one of the workers at the Camp were in charge.  When we got there we all had to sit on the side by all the tyres.  Matua Joe told us that we got five laps each because four other people in our activity group had gone to Waka Ama.  After he told us that we all went down to the Go Karts to have a look.  There were two of them a grey one and a red one.  They showed us around them, how to put the seat belt on, which was the brake and the accelerator and where the kill switch was if we wanted to completly stop the Go Kart.

On my first turn I raced against Shayla in the red Go Kart, and she was in the grey one.  Joe was counting from 3 then 2 then 1... and we were off! I was behind her for a little while.  On the firstlap it was annoying though because of all the dirt that was getting in my eyes.  Eventually I ended up in front of her in our last lap.  When we started racing I was versing Shayla again and I won that race as well! We won Cookies.  Everyone else in our group had their turns on them and then we left.  I really enjoyed the Go Karts racing the most out of all the activities on Camp, it was really fun.

Melville Intermediate - Harlem Shake

On Friday in class Room Five were busy working on Camp related activities and we heard from next door, Room Six, about a video produced by our friends from Mr Fawcett and Room One at Glenview Primary School, and their version of the 'Harlem Shake'.  Glenview produced the following video from their class, which features the siblings of several students from our class as well as a host of students that our students know:

That inspired Mr Willis (who himself is an ex teacher from Glenview School) and Room Six to produce their own version of the 'Harlem Shake' what was wonderful about Room Six (from Melville) effort was that the lesson, discussion and publishing took an afternoon and we're proud to show Room Six, the first class from Melville Intermediate to do the 'Harlem Shake'.

Melville Intermediate - Waikato River Jump

During this week Melville Intermediates Rooms 1,2,5 and 6 have been at the Narrows Camp.  One of the highlights of the week was the students trip from the camp down the Waikato River.  As part of that trip students had an opportunity on the river near the Hamilton Gardens to jump from the wharf, while this may not seem to be too exciting you really need to have a look at the footage to see just how high the students had to climb.  Filmed by Mr Willis (Room Six) on Wednesday 7th March 2013.

Melville Intermediate - Narrows Camp Recount

When I went to camp their was a beatiful energy.  There were so many activities like Go Karts with Levi's Mum Paulette.  Down hill trolley racing with Bianca's Mum Vicky and there was the water slide with Owens Mum Penny.  That water slide - that left me with some battle scars.  There was orienteering and the swimming pool was not very clean.  My favourite activity was the Go Kart racing and the Waka Ama.  We got wet and enjoyed it.  I was in the pink boat with Wattana and Sosifia.  I kept on yelling at Wattana because he kept on stopping paddling but this is the end of my recount.

The above video is of Nathan Go Kart Racing at Camp, filmed by Matua Peter and was produced, edited and put together by Owen and Nathan H from Room Five.

Melville Intermediate - Narrows Camp

Yesterday on the 6th of March 2013 was the last day of School Camp.  All of the children that had attended camp were able to pick and choose an activity.  I had choosen the Go Kart racing,  I also choose to participate in the challenge which we timed the three laps that you were able to race and you had to be the fastest that you could in three laps.

I was seated in the Go Kart and I was feeling like a winner but I was nervous at the same time.  There was the a countdown 3...2...1... GO! I had my foot planted down on the accelerator.  I have a corner up ahead and I felt confident speeding around the corner.  I felt the air brush through my hair.  I finished my first lap, then my second.  Blasting past the finish line I was relieved.  I checked my time on the stop watch and it was fifty seven seconds, which was the fastest female time.  Icis from Room Five.

Melville Intermediate - Weather Reports for Techie Kids

On Friday we were looking at the Techie Kids page from the USA and were reading about their snow and their weather conditions.  We had two groups from Room Five working on videos to help the Techie Kids to understand what the weather is like here in Hamilton.    Manish, Owen and Nathan H created this Snow Report for The Techie Kids! Its got one important piece of information in it, we have had snow in Hamilton twice, twice in the last one hundred years, which included a ten second snow flurry last year.  Also we asked our class how many students had seen snow and the answer was about half (13 out of about 26).  This video below is the Boys creation:
Techie Kids Weather - Snow Manish from myles webb on Vimeo.
We also had a group of Elizabeth, Bianca and Jamie researching the weather forecast for the week ahead. One of the things that we needed to do for the Techie Kids was to convert our temperatures from centigrade into farhenheit which the girls did by using an online converter.  If you have a look at the video you will see its a fairly similar forecase for the next week:

Melville Intermediate - Weather for the Techie Kids

Today in class we saw that we had a number of visitors from the Techie Kids in Michigan, USA.  We viewed their class page and saw that they were currently experiencing a significant amount of snow, and we asking for countries around the world to look at their weather.   We decided to answer their questions by creating a slide show of pictures around the school, research what the temperature is expected to be in the next week, what our conditions are at the moment and what is predicted, including the water restrictions that we are currently experiencing.  You can view their original post by clicking on the link here.

We sent Jamie, Elizabeth, Jackie and Bianca outside to take the photographs above around Melville Intermediate School today to show the Techie Kids what the weather is like in Hamilton and created a series of videos for them explaining what the weather is like.

Melville Intermediate - A brillaint Irish Blog

If you are looking for a different location to visit a fantastic class page then we would strongly recommend that you look at 2nd class Room Six, at Greystones School in Ireland. Its an amazing site with some wonderful work but we always love classes that have wonderful collaboration, and we've been able to do some fantastic interactions with them in such a short time. Pay them a visit, leave a comment and visit their wonderful page. The photographs that tie in with this post are part of our 'Ireland' project that were going to be displaying on the wall of our classroom in Hamilton, New Zealand. We've had a group of students - Elizabeth and Jamie creating the art behind the display, who are also going to spend time next week looking at the similarities and differences between ourselves and Ireland - as our term one topic is 'Building a Sense of Belonging: Relating to Others'.  We've been noticing the similarities and differences between our two countries has been an engaging and exciting, not to mention interesting experience.

Next week we are on School Camp at the Narrows.  All of our team, Tirohanga, will be at School Camp from Monday to Wednesday.  We will be back again from Thursday with plenty of Camp relating postings, because of course we've got our camera charged and are prepared to share the experience with you and don't forget to visit our friends in Ireland here.
