Melville Intermediate - Can you help Qawiyya?

Although its the holdiays, I received this wonderful comment on a recent post from Mrs Nickersons Class, who are part of a global Christmas Project.  Mrs Nickerson and her class are relativley new to blogging but I thought that our audience might be able to help.  Here is Qawiyya's original comment:

Dear Mr. Webb,
I'm a a fifth grade student from Princeton NJ, USA. My class is participating in a global project called Christmas Around The World. We are gathering information about the traditions from other parts of the world and the USA. I would appreciate it if you would ask your students to respond to our questions.
They can contact me through my blog on five alive or email my teacher, Mrs. Nickerson. Five Alive.

Questions:
Do you celebrate christmas? if not, what other winter holiday do you celebrate?
What are some specific traditions that your family has for this holiday?
What are some holiday traditions you have at your school?
Do you have a favorite holiday song?
Thank you for your participation.

Sincerely, Qawiyya ( pronounced kuh-wee-ah)

Melville Intermediate - Bianca Activity Week Recount Part Two

Thisi is the conclusion to Bianca's recount about activity week.

we made some more cards. I made a Christmas card for my niece, big brother, mother, father and big sister. I also made a congratulations card to my big sister and brother in-law, because they are having a baby next year. When I finished all of my cards I helped to clean up the floor. After we had finished cleaning up the floor it was lunch time. For lunch we ordered pizza. Jamie and I had ham and cheese with barbeque sauce on top. Lunch went so fast it was not funny, but Jamie and I were happy because after lunch we were doing something really cool. After lunch we went to the library to watch a movie. Jamie and I brought our beanbags, it was so comfy. The movie we watched was mirror, mirror. We didn’t have any sound for about half an hour. But when we got our sound we started to watch the movie. We only got to watch 3 quarters of the movie. When the bell went we had to go back to the sewing room to get all of our stuff.  Jamie and my hands were really full because we had to take our beanbags, jar, cards, bag and canvas. But we put our cards into our bag and so we only had to take our canvas, jar and beanbag. Once Jamie walked out-side she lost grip of her jar and it fell to the ground. I had put my jar into my bag so then it would be safe. When Jamie dropped her jar all I heard was a bang and I looked back and Jamie’s jar was on the ground. I power walked over to her and helped her to clean it up. Once the jar was cleaned up we went out to the front gate, Jamie hopped into her car and I was standing out-side waiting for my mum but she didn’t come so Jamie’s mum Gail offered a ride to her place.

Melville Intermediate - Brae Activity Week Recount

ACTIVITY WEEK - Melville Film Festival.
On Wednesday the 14th Activity week started. The people in the group were Cody, Nathan, Morgan, Ryan, Deighton, Damien, Dominick and me. My activity was Melville film festival. At 8.40 we had to go outside the music room to meet up. When we were inside Mr. Bell explained what we were doing. First we had to make an ad and storyboard it. We choose to do our ad on headphones so we went outside to film. The plan was that Cody was going to walk up to headphones and put them on then his friends would come up and share the headphones around. Then Damien would explain the price and where to get it. Then Dominick and I started to edit it which went very well. Mr. Bell even made a scary remix of it. Then we had to make the real movie which we decided was going to be about zombies. We went to film the first scene which was when Deighton the scientist made the zombie formula and Morgan spilt it causing the apocalypse. Then Morgan Dominick and I edited it in imovie HD we added some cool effects like fog and lighting sound effects. Mr. Bell taught us how to use imovie HD before. After the 2 days past we had our movie and food. The movie was men in black 3 which I hadn’t seen before and the food was pizza timtams juice coke and chips. I had lots of fun at the Melville film festival I would defiantly do it again and my friends would say the same.

Melville Intermediate - Skyping with Canada

Today we skyped with Canada it was fun learning new things and teaching them things like your tribes and foods they had lots of qwestions and it was fun answering them. Today Damien and I exchange cultural knowledge about our different country's and learnt a lot of new info about Canada and it was really fun. Damien and Connor spent time this morning spekaing with students from Whitecap First Nation School in Canada. It fits in nicely with relating to others, one of the five key competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum which all students are suppossed to involve themselves in. The line was a little bit laggy but overall it was a positive learning experience for our students and great to connect with students from another county.

Melville Intermediate - Activity Week Recount Bianca

On Wednesday 14th, 15th and 16th November 2012, Melville Intermediate School had their annual activity week. I was in Girls stuff it was fun. Day 1: On the first day of activity week when I got to school I helped out Mrs de Waard to clean up and get ready for everyone to arrive. Once everyone got to school we got ready to start. First we made bath bombs. Jamie and I partnered up. Our bath bombs were orange and smelled really nice. We made seven bath bombs each, 6 egg cartons and 1 paua shell. Then after we had had finished we had to pack up and clean up our stuff. Once everyone had finished we all got a biscuit from Mrs de Waard and then we went outside for morning tea. After morning tea we made friend ship bracelets. I made one for my niece and one for me. The first one came out really cool but the second one was really weird. But they still looked cool. Jamie only made one, but it did take her awhile to do, so then it came out really cool. After we had finished and when the lunch bell went we went out side. Then after lunch during RRR we played this dot game. It was fun. After RRR was finished, we made some flowers out of icing. Mrs de Waard had made some flowers herself, so we got to see what they looked like when they were done. Once we started Mrs de Waard was taking us through the steps to make an icing flower. When we had finished we could make any thing we wanted out of icing. We made the flowers to put on our cupcakes.

Day 2: “Yay we are going to have fun at school today at school today,” I say to Jamie. Once Mrs de Waard had finished saying what we were doing today, we started to make icing to put on our cupcakes that Mrs de Waard had made and brought in for us to use. After we had made our icing and put our cupcakes onto an ice-cream container lid we got started. We put our icing on top of our cup-cakes. When we finished putting the icing on our cup-cakes we could put all of our icing creatures on top of our cup-cakes. When we had finished we got a choice of eating one or we could keep them. Jamie and I ate our little ones first. The flavours of the muffins were vanilla. They were so good. I used some of Jamie’s icing letters and flower. I used her V, her L and one of her flower bouquets. After morning-tea we made canvases. We got to put any-thing we wanted onto them. I made mine into a pin board. It was pink checker board material for my back round, then purple ribbon for the edges and for in the middle. Jamie’s one was green with sparkles in it. Most people put ‘LOVE’ on theirs and painted them, so I thought I would be a bit different and not put any paint on it what so ever. After lunch time every-one got to finish of their canvas, but Jamie and I just sat and talked to each-other. After RRR we got ready to go play games on the computers in the computer room. We stayed in there for about 15 minutes, or you could say 5 minutes before the bell went. Jamie and I played on red ball. When we had finished we went back to the sewing room which we got our stuff and went home. I left my canvas there so then the P.V.A glue could dry.

Day 3: When we got to school Mrs de Waard instructed us to all go to the cooking room, Mrs de Waard told us to get into a group of 4. We stare at the white board ‘We must be making muffins today’ I think to myself. Sure enough Mrs de Waard says that we are going to have 2 different types of muffin flavours. There are cheese and chocolate. In my group there was Jamie, Melody, Anathalia and I. In my group we made the chocolate muffins. What made them chocolate is that we put about 5 chocolate buttons in the middle so then the buttons would melt. There were 2 groups that made chocolate and the other 2 made the cheese. After everyone had finished making their muffins we got to take 1 of the muffins from the table across from us. I took mine home to share with my mum. The cheese ones were all rite, but the chocolate ones were the bomb, not just that I made them but the chocolate just made them taste so nice. Then at the moment when we went back to the sewing room the bell went for morning tea. After morning tea we made cards and we could decorate a jar if we wanted to. I started to make some cards and when I had finished making my cards I decorated a jar. I had a machona jar so I took the lid of the jar and took the plastic bit of and stuck some shells into it and then I put the plastic bit back on to it. Jamie did the same thing as well, but I got the idea of her because she started it and I asked if I could do it as well. After we had finished we made some more cards. I made a Christmas card for my niece, big brother, mother, father and big sister. I also made a congratulations card to my big sister and brother in-law, because they are having a baby next year. When I finished all of my cards I helped to clean up the floor. After we had finished

Melville Intermediate - Connecting with Canada

On Wednesday morning in New Zealand it will be Tuesday afternoon in Canada.  We're going to be connecting with Mr Frape and the students from the Whitecap Dakota First Nation School.  Its an amazing opportunity for our students to learn about the culture of others, to talk with students in a country that none of Room Five have been in and an excellent chance for our students to relate to others.

We'll be recording the session and posting some highlights of this later in the week.

Our super visions were Mrs. Bleakin and Mrs. Patterson. On Friday before last week we were going to the group that we in to talk about what we will do on the Activity Week. There were only two students from room 5 which is our class. I was felt so shamed because none of my friends were in the same activity that I was in. I was still happy because I got participate in an activity and none of my friends were doing an activity. We were already talking about what we will do. On Wednesday we divided in to two groups. The other half of the class went with Mrs. Patterson to the cooking room to make morning tea. The other half was staying with Mrs. Bleakin and Mrs. Simpson the jewelry maker to make some jewelry necklaces. I went with Mrs. Patterson and the other of our group. When we get to then getting to the cooking room, we started to get organized to where we making our food. Mrs. Patterson told us that we making scones, Sweet scones and cheese scones. Elizabeth is my buddy and we work together sometimes. We chose to make cheese scones. After that we have to make muffins it was morning tea so we took the food to the art room which is where we were. After morning tea we weren’t allowed to go outside for interval. You only get out if you want to go to the toilets or get a drink. After interval we swap with the other half of the class and do the same thing, but the other half made lunch. On the last block some make garden tiles and some were doing tee-shirt. On Thursday we all did the same thing. On first block we walk to the bus at the front of the school. Harry the school bus driver drop us off to an ART GALLARY in town. When we get in we saw a pool. It was really cool in there. We saw some different pieces of art. We saw some pictures of the old time also a video. It was a big building and it was beautiful inside, in the gallery I saw a Maori Waka and a real kiwi. It was morning tea so we ate our morning tea. After that we kept on looking but it was another Gallery. We saw some nice dishes, necklaces. We also spot Mrs. Simpson jewelry. On Friday it was the last day of the activity week. We had to bring our own lunch. At 9:45 we went to the bus to get off to Waitakaruru Park. When we got there I, a woman came out from the shed and talk to us about the Park while we ate our morning tea. After that she gave us the map of the park. It had lots of different interesting things. We had lots of fun. After that we to the bus and drove of to Te Aroha hot pool. We ate our lunch in the bus. Now we get off to the pool. It was more fun after all. By, Asinate.

Melville Intermediate - Huhu Beetle

0n the 3rd of December at lunch time, Rebekah, Mandy, Elizabeth, Mary-Anne and Jamie were walking back to class and Mary-Anne had seen a huge type of bettle in the drain and sream we all rushed b a little bit backwards to see what had happened. All of us at first thought it was a huge cockroach, then a weta, then half weta half cockroach. It was on its back when we first saw it then it wriggled it self over to the side of the drain and managed to turn over. We stared at it for a while and then started talking and the bell had rung so we started to walk back to class when people started poking it with sticks and that. We got back to class and we asked Mr Webb if we could talke some photos and a video. We Took some photos and then it started to walk around a bit. Next minute it started crawing out of the drain. We started to scream and run, It was massive when it cam eout and we could actually see a bit better. We got back to class and Mr Webb said we could search up what kind of insect it was. It ended up being a huhu beetle and you can eat them! Yuk! It had patterns on its back and it could fly. We had a great time  time filming it!
